Ondo Senator Encourages Youth to Acquire Vocational Skills for Self-Reliance

By Abigail Philip David

Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire, representing Ondo Central Senatorial District, has urged young Nigerians, especially recent graduates, to pursue vocational skills for self-reliance rather than relying solely on government employment.

Speaking in Akure at a three-day skill acquisition program for fresh graduates from his district, Adegbonmire emphasized that it is unrealistic to expect the government to provide jobs for everyone. The event, which began Monday and runs through Wednesday, is a collaboration between the senator and the National Agricultural Extension and Research Liaison Services, with over 170 youths participating.

“The expectation that government will be the primary employer is not sustainable. If we are to truly address unemployment, we need to equip people with skills that empower them to work independently,” Adegbonmire said. “This program is designed to provide these skills, enabling self-employment and reducing unemployment rates in Nigeria. To me, education is not just about earning degrees but gaining the tools for self-reliance.”

He added that consultants would assess the program’s impact, urging participants to make the most of the training.

Engr. Ayodele Adesina, representing the consulting firm Energy Impact Consultant, noted that 100 of the participants, who are recent graduates, would be trained in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills, including CCTV and solar-powered inverter installation. Meanwhile, 70 women will receive training in agricultural skills, particularly in the palm oil processing value chain, to enhance their economic independence. Participants will be provided with tools upon completion of the program to support their entrepreneurial ventures.
