Former Super Eagles midfielder Christian Obodo has advised Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen to carefully consider his next move amid ongoing transfer rumours, warning that poor decisions could stall his career progression.
In an interview with Brila.net on Tuesday, Obodo said Osimhen’s high release clause and salary demands have made many top European clubs reluctant to pursue him.
“Osimhen still wants to play top-level European football and achieve big things, but Napoli’s release clause and his wages are pushing clubs away,” Obodo explained. “No club wants to make a move that could backfire.”
Perception Gap Between Nigerian and South American Players
Obodo also touched on the broader issue of how Nigerian footballers are perceived internationally, stating that if Osimhen were from South America, particularly Brazil, clubs might be more eager to secure his signature.
“Nigeria doesn’t package its players well. If Osimhen were Brazilian, he would probably have been signed already. The way some Nigerians speak about their own players also doesn’t help,” he added.
Time to Make Smart Choices
The former Udinese star urged Osimhen to weigh his options carefully, especially with offers reportedly coming in from both Europe and the Middle East.
“It’s now up to Osimhen to compromise if he still wants to play in Europe, or go to Al Hilal for the big money. Whatever choice he makes, we can only hope it’s the right one.”
Obodo’s comments come as Osimhen continues to be linked with clubs in the Premier League, Ligue 1, and Saudi Pro League, with Napoli holding firm on a hefty price tag.
