Oyo State Government Clears 359 Shanties from Ibadan Public Schools

Must read

The Oyo State Government has successfully removed a total of 359 illegal structures and shanties that had encroached upon the premises of public primary and secondary schools in the Ibadan metropolis. This decisive action was led by the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Architect Abdulmojeed Mogbonjubola, in a bid to restore order and cleanliness to school premises across the state.

Approximately two months ago, Arc. Mogbonjubola initiated the issuance of eviction letters, which were duly conveyed through the principals and heads of the affected schools. Furthermore, direct eviction notices were issued to the owners of the illegal shops, shanties, and structures, which were acknowledged by them.

The Commissioner emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to eliminating any obstructions that might hinder the learning environment in schools. He stated, “We would not rest until sanity is maintained. Every student can excel and reach their full potential only in a favorable learning environment. The current administration, under the leadership of His Excellency, Engineer Seyi Makinde, remains steadfast in recognizing this imperative.”

As a result of these efforts, approximately 45 schools that had been plagued by illegal structures now present a much-improved appearance. Schools in areas such as Ode Aje, Orita Aperin, IMG, Olubadan Basic Schools 1, 2, and 3, Government Technical College, Christ Church High School, United Mission College Demonstration School 1, IDC Basic School, St. Stephen’s Primary School, Community High School Alegongo, Issabatudeen Girls’ Grammar School, St. Paul’s Anglican Primary School, Methodist Grammar School, Emmanuel College, and others have been cleansed of these encroachments.

The Commissioner issued a stern warning to those who might attempt to reoccupy the school premises with illegal shanties, cautioning that they would be subject to the full force of Oyo State Environmental laws.

Governor Engineer Seyi Makinde, during a recent inspection of Ibadan metropolis, expressed his dismay at the prevalence of shanties and illegal structures surrounding many schools. He found this situation highly unsuitable and promptly took action to address it.

In a show of appreciation, Architect Mogbonjubola commended the owners of the illegal shops and structures who had voluntarily complied with the eviction orders.

Key members of the team included Mr. Moradeyo Sunday, the Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Directors, and Environmental Health Officers.
