The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has set its sights on regaining power in Nigeria, with plans to secure more governorship positions and reclaim the presidency in 2027.

This commitment was expressed by the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) during a visit to Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, at his home in Sampou, Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area.

Speaking on behalf of the NWC, National Treasurer Alhaji Ahmed Yayare emphasized that growing dissatisfaction and economic hardship across the country are key drivers of the party’s resurgence.

“The discontent is evident nationwide,” Yayare said. “Nigerians are yearning for change, and the PDP will produce more governors in 2027. If we do not take over leadership, it could mark the end of democracy in Nigeria.”

He further asserted that the PDP remains the only credible opposition capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“The cries of hunger and poverty are deafening across the 36 states,” Yayare continued. “The APC struggles to campaign amid public outrage. Nigeria needs PDP’s return to power, and we are counting on your support to salvage the nation.”

The NWC also outlined plans to visit PDP-governed states, urging party governors to align their strategies ahead of the 2027 elections.

During the visit, the committee extended condolences to Governor Diri over the deaths of former Deputy Inspector General of Police Moses Jituboh and Bayelsa’s Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Elizabeth Bidei.

PDP National Secretary Ude Okoye reaffirmed the party’s commitment to repositioning itself as a viable leadership alternative for Nigerians.

“We are committed to strengthening the PDP and demonstrating that there is a better option for Nigerians,” Okoye stated, praising Diri’s leadership and development initiatives.

In his response, Governor Diri called for unity among PDP governors, emphasizing the importance of collective progress over personal interests.

“We must work closely and do what is right, without fear or favour,” Diri said. “Consensus-building should be our first option to resolve conflicts. If the PDP fails under our watch, posterity will not forgive us.”

Diri also reaffirmed his loyalty to the party and warned against internal sabotage.

“Those who feel bigger than the party are welcome to leave,” he said. “PDP made us—we cannot pretend to be part of it by day and something else by night. We must cleanse our house from within.”

Diri supported the idea of forming a broader coalition to challenge the APC’s dominance, stressing the critical role of the PDP in forming a united front to lead Nigeria out of its current struggles.

“Our focus should be on strengthening the PDP as a beacon of hope for Nigeria,” Diri concluded. “Together, we can restore this nation.”
