Former Anambra State governor and politician, Peter Obi, has urged the Bola Tinubu administration to conduct a national debate on the proposed tax reform bills before they are passed into law.
In a statement shared on his official X account on Monday, Obi emphasized the need for transparency and public engagement in policymaking. While acknowledging the importance of tax reforms for national development, he stressed that such reforms must be carefully deliberated upon to ensure inclusivity and public trust.
“Tax reform is a critical issue, and there is nothing wrong with pursuing it. However, such reform must be subject to robust and informed public debate,” Obi said.
He proposed that public hearings be held to gather input from Nigerians across various sectors, allowing for diverse perspectives to shape the reforms. This, he argued, would foster trust and ensure policies reflect the broader public interest.
“Matters of this magnitude require extensive deliberation and careful consideration—they should never be rushed. Public hearings must be conducted to allow for diverse opinions and inputs,” he added.
Obi also highlighted the importance of assessing the overall impact of tax reforms on the nation and its regions. He urged the government to prioritize public sensitization and secure widespread support before implementing any policy changes.
“Trust and legitimacy are the foundation of effective governance, and without them, even the best-intended reforms may fail. Let us prioritize transparency, deliberation, and public engagement in charting the path forward. This is how we build a truly participatory democracy,” he concluded.
The proposed Tax Reform Bills have sparked widespread controversy, with northern governors among those calling for their withdrawal.
