Protesters to Tinubu: “How Long Must We Endure?”

By Milcah Tanimu

Major cities across Nigeria are witnessing widespread demonstrations as the anticipated nationwide hunger protest begins. Protesters are carrying placards and chanting slogans, with images and videos spreading rapidly on social media.

In a video shared by Oxygist, a protester named Emmanuel shared his reasons for joining the protest: “Today is a hunger day. Hunger has brought me out. Insecurity has brought me out. I don’t have money to buy fuel. If our demands are not met, we will remain in the streets. We cannot keep quiet.”

At the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, another protester pleaded with President Tinubu, saying, “Mr. President, the hardship is too much. We are suffering in this country. You tell us every time to endure. For how long?”

Protesters in Lagos were seen singing “End bad governance,” while a group in Port Harcourt, shown on AIT, sang the old national anthem. In Abuja, demonstrators chanted “Revolution” songs.

The protests, driven by the severe economic hardship in the country, are expected to continue until August 10, 2024.
