Re- Relocations Of Some Agencies From Abuja To Lagos From The Initial Stage

By MB Kabir

I do not have any interest in joining National issues in a platform like this taking in to cognizance the class and category of people there in it.

I always wanted to join issues in an academic and educational discuss where any issue will be of great use and benefit to the discussants.

The transfer of some Units/Departments under NNPC and Aviation Ministry from Abuja the Federal Capital Torritory to Lagos have prompted me to look at it from the negative (disadvantages) as follows:

There are several disadvantages to the relocation of Ministry of Aviation some Central Bank of Nigeria departments from Abuja to Lagos these include:

1. Increased costs: Relocating departments from one city to another involves significant financial costs. This includes costs associated with moving employees, setting up new infrastructure, and establishing new office spaces.

The expenditure on relocation could strain the bank’s budget and affect its operational efficiency. 2. Disruption of operations: Relocating departments can lead to increased downtime and disruption of normal operations.

The process of moving employees, equipment, and records can result in delays and inefficiencies. This may impact the smooth functioning of the bank and its ability to carry out its core functions effectively.

3. Employee dissatisfaction and morale: The relocation of departments may cause dissatisfaction among employees who have to uproot their lives and families to move to a new city. Not all employees may be willing or able to relocate, leading to potential talent loss and a decrease in overall employee morale.

4. Loss of expertise: Relocation may result in the loss of experienced and skilled staff members who are unable or unwilling to move. This can lead to a loss of institutional knowledge and expertise, which could have negative consequences on the quality and effectiveness of the bank’s operations.

5. Reduced coordination and communication: Relocating departments to different cities can create challenges in terms of coordination and communication between teams. Physical distance and time zone differences may hinder effective collaboration, leading to potential delays and misunderstandings in decision-making processes.

6. Impact on the local economy: The relocation of departments from Abuja to Lagos may negatively impact the local economy in both cities. Abuja may experience a decrease in economic activity and employment opportunities, while Lagos may face increased congestion and overcrowding as more organizations set up their operations there.

7. Political implications: The relocation of Aviation Ministry and some Central Bank departments can have political implications, especially if it is seen as favoring one city over another. This may lead to controversies and disputes, potentially affecting the institution’s reputation and relationships with stakeholders.

These disadvantages highlight the challenges and potential drawbacks associated with relocating Central Bank departments from Abuja to Lagos.

Each factor must be carefully considered before making a decision to ensure a smooth transition and minimize any adverse effects on the bank’s operations and employees.
