Reps Demand Reversal as Telcos Implement Tariff Hike

By Abigail Philip David

Nigerian telecommunications operators have begun implementing a 50% tariff increase after receiving regulatory approval from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). However, lawmakers are pushing to halt the rollout, citing the economic hardship faced by citizens.

On Tuesday, the House of Representatives directed telecom providers to suspend the price increase immediately, emphasizing the potential financial strain on Nigerians. Lawmakers argued that the hike would further burden consumers already struggling with rising costs of living.

The directive comes amid growing public concern over the affordability of telecom services, as many Nigerians depend on mobile networks for communication, business, and access to digital services. The House vowed to engage with relevant stakeholders, including the NCC and telecom operators, to review the decision and explore possible alternatives.

Further developments are expected as discussions between lawmakers, regulators, and industry players continue.
