The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Labour, Employment, and Productivity, and Vice-Chairman of the Federal Character Committee, Senator Diket Plang, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government for renaming the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja. He also extended heartfelt congratulations to former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon, calling the renaming a well-deserved honor.

In a statement, Senator Plang described the gesture as a fitting tribute to a leader who has significantly contributed to Nigeria’s development and upheld the principles of unity and nationalism.

“The former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, is a unifier and a nationalist who strongly believes in one Nigeria. The selfless and exemplary leadership he displayed as Head of State remains a benchmark for governance to this day. He is a man of great humility and an enduring symbol of national pride,” Plang said.

He highlighted General Gowon’s pivotal role during Nigeria’s civil war from 1967 to 1970, emphasizing its importance in preserving the nation’s unity. “The renaming of the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University is a profound honor and a testament to his enduring legacy,” he added.

Senator Plang further expressed the joy and pride of the people of Plateau Central Senatorial Zone and Plateau State, where General Gowon hails from. “The renaming has brought immense joy to our people. It is a well-deserved recognition for a leader whose legacy continues to inspire,” he said.

The senator also assured that the National Assembly would expedite the necessary legislative processes to formalize the renaming, which has already been approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

“This honor is not only a fitting tribute to our father, General Gowon, on his 90th birthday but also a celebration for the entire Plateau State. It reinforces the values of patience, hard work, selflessness, and integrity. We thank President Tinubu and the Federal Government for this commendable gesture,” Plang concluded.
