EPL: Arsenal Thrash West Brom 4-0

Alexandre Lacazette scored twice as Arsenal further eased their early season struggles by thrashing West Brom 4-0 at a snow covered Hawthorns on Saturday.

After seven Premier League games without a win, the Gunners have now won three in a week to dampen talk of a relegation fight and move back into contention for the European places.

Kieran Tierney’s stunning solo goal opened the floodgates as Sam Allardyce’s men have now conceded nine times in two games.

Bukayo Saka rounded off a brilliant team move to double the visitors’ lead before Lacazette struck twice in four second-half minutes.

West Brom are yet to win in four games since Allardyce took charge and the former England manager needs to quickly instill the defensive discipline he has made his trademark at previous clubs if the Baggies are to have any chance of survival.

Just over a week ago Allardyce said Arsenal were in a battle against the drop, but Mikel Arteta’s decision to finally put faith in his crop of talented youngsters has turned his side’s season around.

Saka was again the shining light, while Tierney and Emile Smith Rowe also impressed.

Arsenal’s poor run was principally caused by a struggle to score goals, but they were a threat from the off despite the treacherous conditions.

Sam Johnstone denied Hector Bellerin and Saka inside the first 10 minutes, but he was powerless to stop Tierney’s stunning opener on 23 minutes.

The Scotland international left Darnell Furlong trailing in his wake before cutting inside onto his weaker right foot and curling into the top corner.

Arsenal’s second was reminiscent of their flowing football at the height of the Arsene Wenger era as Saka fed Lacazette, whose brilliant pass played Smith Rowe in behind the West Brom defence and he squared for Saka to tap into an empty net.

The one way traffic continued after the break and some comical West Brom defending led to the third as Semi Ajayi smashed a dangerous cross off his own post and the ball broke to Lacazette to apply a simple finish.

Moments later another raid from Tierney down the left teed up Lacazette for another finish from point-blank range.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has missed out on Arsenal’s return to scoring form over the past eight days as he turned a glorious chance from Willian’s mishit shot over before Johnstone produced another fine save from the Gunners’ captain.

However, four goals were more than enough to prove Arsenal’s return to form as they moved to within six points of the top four with two favourable fixtures against Crystal Palace and Newcastle to come.

West Brom on the other hand remain six points adrift of safety and showing little sign of life since Allardyce’s arrival.

EPL: Ebere Eze admits he was in tears after Arsenal rejected him

Crystal Palace midfielder, Ebere Eze, has revealed he was left in tears after Arsenal rejected him as a youngster.

Eze was let go by the Gunners when he was 13.

Now 22, he has impressed since making a £17million move to Palace from Queens Park Rangers in August.

However, success did not come easy for Eze, who thought he would make it big with the Gunners when he signed for them before his 16th birthday.

“I got scouted by a few clubs and that’s when I first went to Arsenal,” he told Premier League Productions.

“At a young age, it was hard, especially being released. Me and my mum cried, everyone was so upset – that’s all you know at that age.

“But looking back at it now, that’s the start of my journey and I’m grateful to God that’s how it went. If it wasn’t for that, I may not have got the resilience, bravery, to go and be who I want to be elsewhere. It’s shaped me to be who I am today.”

Eze played for Reading, Fulham and Millwall before joining QPR having left north London

Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse soared to the summit this week to finally end Harry Kane (No 3) and Heung-Min Son’s (No 5) run at the top table – despite Kane converting from the spot to help Spurs beat Brighton 2-1.

The Saints’ captain powered into pole position with an assist and two goals from direct free-kicks during the 4-3 win over Aston Villa on Sunday – becoming the first player to do so in the Premier League since Christian Eriksen in 2015.

Team-mates Danny ings (No 4) and Jannik Vestergaard (No 6) were also among the goals, with the former netting a spectacular effort before suffering a knee injury with five minutes left on the clock.

Despite being on the losing side, Jack Grealish produced yet another dazzling display with a goal and an assist to land runner-up spot – maintaining his untarnished run in the top 10 form players this season.

Chelsea centre-back Kurt Zouma edged into No 7 spot after doubling the Blues’ lead in a 3-0 win at Burnley, with Manchester City full-back Kyle Walker (No 8) scoring the winner and producing a stunning all-round performance against former club Sheffield United.

Wolves’ Raul Jimenez (No 9) retained his place among the elite performers, while Patrick Bamford (No 10) failed to extend his league tally as Leeds crashed to a 4-1 defeat against Leicester.

Chelsea hammer Crystal Palace 4-0 at Stamford Bridge in second half onslaught

Chelsea beat Crystal Palace 4-0 at home in the Premier League on Saturday as Ben Chilwell marked his league debut for the Blues by scoring a goal and creating another for fellow defender Kurt Zouma before Jorginho sealed the win with two penalties.

Palace had stifled Chelsea in a goalless first half but Chilwell punished them for a rare defensive error, firing home from close range in the 50th minute after Mamadou Sakho fluffed a clearance, allowing Cesar Azpilicueta to line up a cross.

Chelsea doubled their lead in the 66th minute when the visitors failed to clear a corner and Zouma rose above everyone else in the box to meet a cross by Chilwell and send a header past Vicente Guaita.

Jorginho made sure of the win when he converted two penalties in the space of five minutes late in the game.

Chelsea coach Frank Lampard will be as happy with his team’s first clean sheet of the season as the four goals they scored.

Lampard made six changes to the team that salvaged a 3-3 draw after being 3-0 behind at West Bromwich Albion last weekend, four of them at the back as he gave league debuts to goalkeeper Edouard Mendy and left back Chilwell.

  • I’m not too old for the Premier League – Thiago Silva declares

I’m not too old for the Premier League – Thiago Silva declares

    I

New Chelsea signing, Thiago Silva says he is not afraid to use his status as a former champion with Brazil, Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan to help the club’s push for glory this new season despite turning 36.

The defender celebrated his 36th birthday on Tuesday September 22, and is preparing to make his Chelsea debut against Barnsley in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

Even though doubt’s remain about his adaptability to the pace of Premier league football due to his age, the Brazil international, thinks his dedication on and off the field means he will come good after joining from PSG last month.

“No, I don’t worry at all because I know where I want to get to because I have really high hopes about this team, this young team,” Thiago Silva said as Chelsea unveiled their new signing ahead of his debut.

“Thank God, I physically feel really good. Age is just a number on your document but physically, I feel very young. I am very well prepared for this and I have been preparing for this my whole life. People who know me know how much I put into my work.

“I put in 200 per cent and this is a great opportunity that Chelsea and Frank Lampard have given me and I don’t want to let them down.”

He added that he had never previously desired a move to the Premier League until he changed his perception of the division: “I had never really seen myself in the Premier League previously. That’s because I saw it as a difficult style of football personally.

“I didn’t have any desire to play in the Premier League because my impression of the football played was of long balls, high balls and long shots. I thought at the time that I couldn’t see myself playing in that championship but, over time, I have seen that the championship has developed tremendously, there’s a lot more technical quality.

“A lot of teams play with the ball on the ground, with the full-backs attacking in the area and every team has their own idea and strengths but I previously saw it characterised by long balls and that didn’t appeal to me.

“I know how to play that way but my preference is to play with the ball on the ground. I know my quality, and little by little, the Premier League football really won me over. Anyone who knows me knows that. At 36, I am arriving to play in one of the best championships in the world.

“This is usually a league of young players but I am coming here as an older player and I see it because Frank Lampard and Chelsea wants a player of my experience.

“If someone wants a runner, then I refer to the words that Carlo Ancelotti used for James: ‘If you want someone to run, they can sign Usain Bolt’. With my experience and the young players here, I hope to help them in this new adventure.”

According to Silva, he and Lampard will set the standard of what it takes to win in a squad littered with younger players .

“I think it is important to show the young players that just playing matches isn’t enough; they need to be preparing to be ready and to be in the best state that is possible,” he added.

“They need to see how important it is to win things because it is people who are successful and winners who are remembered. The example is our manager, Frank Lampard; he has won the biggest and main championships in world football, so he will be remembered eternally. Not just by Chelsea fans but England fans too.”

Watford relegated from EPL after battling 2-3 loss at Arsenal

Watford were relegated from the 2019/2020 English Premier League (EPL) on Sunday after going down fighting in a 2-3 loss at Arsenal.

But they almost clawed their way back from a three-goal deficit, largely due to former Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck.

They got off to a nightmare start when defender Craig Dawson brought down Alexandre Lacazette in the area in the third minute to concede a penalty kick, which Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang converted.

Arsenal doubled their lead in the 24th minute when Kieran Tierney’s shot brushed the arm of Watford midfielder Will Hughes for an own goal.

Also, Aubameyang poured on the misery 10 minutes later with an unchallenged overhead kick from close range to make it 3-0.

Watford were given hope of a way back into the game shortly before the break when Welbeck, who left Arsenal to join Watford last summer, won a penalty kick.

The visitors won the penalty kick after Welbeck was scythed down by David Luiz.

Hornets captain Troy Deeney drilled his spot kick past Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez to reduce the deficit.

Welbeck then narrowed the gap further in the 65th minute, tapping home from close range after a cross from Ismaila Sarr.

Bournemouth boost EPL survival hopes as they stun Leicester

Bournemouth breathed life into their English Premier League (EPL) survival bid on Sunday, coming from a goal down to beat fourth-placed Leicester City 4-1 for their first win in 10 games.

Leicester were in command after Jamie Vardy’s scrappy first-half goal.

But with the relegation trapdoor creaking underneath their feet, Bournemouth turned the match around in stunning fashion with Dominic Solanke scoring twice.

For Leicester, defeat was a huge blow to their hopes of a top four finish.

Junior Stanislas equalised from the penalty kick spot in the 66th minute after a mistake by Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.

The goalkeeper was at fault again one minute later when he allowed Solanke’s shot to trickle over the line.

To make matters worse for the foxes, defender Caglar Soyuncu was shown a straight red card after tangling with Callum Wilson immediately after Bournemouth’s goal.

Leicester then collapsed in alarming fashion.

Stanislas’s shot in the 83rd minute went in off Leicester defender Jonny Evans before Solanke seized on more dreadful Leicester defending to add his second.

With Aston Villa winning earlier in the day, Bournemouth began the match second from bottom, six points behind fourth-from-bottom Watford.

The victory —– their first since Feb. 1 —– means that with three games remaining they still have hope of securing a sixth successive season of top flight football.

They moved back above Aston Villa to 18th place on 31 points, three behind both Watford and West Ham United, who face each other in the next round of fixtures.(Reuters/NAN)
