    Ortom closes case at tribunal

Gov Samuel Ortom of Benue on Saturday, closed his case at the ongoing Benue Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal in Makurdi and expressed confident that the tribunal will deliver justice.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ortom, who on Saturday, stormed the courtroom with a litany of aides, party supporters and well-wishers, did not give evidence.

He said the onus of proving the case rested with the petitioner.

“After taking a critical look at the evidence provided by the petitioners, we have come to the inevitable conclusion that we will not be calling any further witnesses.”

However, counsel to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Oba Maduabuchi (SAN), who was next in line to open his case, asked the court to grant him adjournment till Monday, Aug. 19 to do that.

He said he would call five witnesses and close his case.

Both parties in the suit agreed to the request and the tribunal chairman, Justice Henry Olusiyi, thereafter, adjourned the matter to Monday, Aug. 19.

Speaking to journalists after the sitting, Gov Ortom, expressed confidence in the court to uphold justice, claiming that the 2019 governorship election in Benue was free, fair and credible.

Also Speaking to journalists on why he decided to call only one witness, Ortom’s counsel, Hon, said the statement on oath of the petitioner himself and his star witness for the whole state, Joe Abaagu were not signed, and therefore, not substantial.

NAN recalls that both Ortom and the PDP had requested the court to disqualify Mr Abaagu from testifying on the basis that his statements on oath were not signed and proceeded to appeal against the decision of the tribunal to allow the witness to testify.

The tribunal had argued that it would rule on the eligibility of the witness to testify in its final judgment on the petition, a position that was upheld by the Appeal court. (NAN)

***In his responses, Senator Sani said it would be selfish for the north to clutch control after 2023

    By Jennifer Y Omiloli

The senator who represented Kaduna central during the eighth National Assembly, Shehu Sani, has bludgeoned those mooting the possibility of the north clutching force past 2023.

He said the north would be careless on the off chance that it neglects to give up capacity to south after President Muhammadu Buhari’s subsequent term.

Daybreak.ng accumulated that Sani who was responding to Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s ongoing call for nullification of power turn, said it would be out of line following eight years, for north to hold grasp of power in Nigeria.

Governor El-Rufai had put forth a defense for relinquishment of zoning courses of action for political offices, saying the plans should have been de-stressed and eventually surrendered for capability.

He said Nigeria couldn’t stand to proceed on a similar way of zoning positions dependent on districts or inceptions, portraying the zoning of political offices as a boundary to political fairness.

Responding to El-Rufai’s remark when he paid Sallah reverence to the first executive governor of old Kaduna state, Balarabe Musa, on Monday, August 12, Sani expressed completely that southerners, especially the southwest, did everything conceivable to guarantee Buhari developed in 2015.

According to him, “It is an act of ingratitude for any northerner to think that by 2023, he or she should aspire for office in the view of the fact that southerners, particularly the southwest did everything possible to support the northern candidate to emerge as the president in 2015.

“We have not forgotten that president Buhari had contested three times without becoming president and on the fourth time, with the support of people from the south, he emerged the president of the country. It would be unfair after eight years, for us to think of continuing to hold the grip and levers of power in Nigeria.”

He included after President Buhari, power needs to turn toward the south, including that the southwest helped the north to be the place it is today.

“You can’t talk of competency when you have not produced an Igbo president. Are they not Nigerians? You cannot continue to punish them for the offense which they are not architect of? That is my view,” he said.

  • Catholic Rev. Fr. Offu’s Bank Account emptied 25 minutes after killed by Gunmen

A Catholic reverend father has had his bank account wiped out by an unidentified person, 25 minutes after he was killed by gunmen

Report by Daily Trust shows that less than 25 minutes after unknown gun men shot dead the Catholic Priest, Rev Fr. Paul Offu last Thursday, his bank account was emptied by a yet to be identified person.

The inside source informed Daily Trust that considering the time of Offu’s murder and when the withdrawal was made, “it makes one to wonder how fast the killers (assuming they actually made the withdrawal) were able to rush to the bank and withdrew all the cash,” asking rather angrily: “Who was, indeed, responsible for disclosing the pin number of the priest ATM?”

According to the source, who argued that, while she was not holding brief for those that killed the priest, “there was need for the security operatives to look inward and ascertain who actually did the withdrawals from the murdered priest bank account shortly after he was killed.”

She said that the inbuilt camera in the ATM would likely capture the face of the person apparently without the individual knowing it.
“It is not certain that the person or persons who made the quick withdrawal from Fr Offu’s bank account destroyed the camera before operating the ATM. So the police could exploit this angle and make sure they leave no stone unturned in their investigation,” she said.

Fr Offu was shot dead, while a commercial driver, Mr. Kenneth Igwe, who was said to have encountered the gunmen while in the operation,   was kidnapped by the gun men that quickly disappeared into the bush. But Igwe’s decomposing corpse was later found in the bush by security forces on Monday.

Before his death, Fr Offu was the Parish priest of St James the Greater Parish, Ugbowka in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State. But he hailed from Okpatu in Udi Local Government Area and was reportedly dragged out of his car and killed on Ihe-Agbudu Road in Awgu Local Government Area of the state.

However, the security operatives have mobilized and begun a manhunt for the killers. The State police spokesman, SP Ebere Amaraizu said that the police would fish out all those who were involved the crime and make them face the law.

Unscheduled visit: Kaduna Govt. queries absentee doctors at Rigasa General Hospital

Kaduna State Deputy Governor, Dr Hadiza Balarabe on Tuesday directed the management of Rigasa General Hospital, Kaduna to issue queries to doctors who were not duty when she visited the hospital.

Balarabe gave the directive when she paid unscheduled visit following reports of nonchalant attitude of some of the staff and the unkempt environment of the hospital.

She told the Chief Medical Director, Dr Maryam Abubakar that her visit was necessitated by an unpalatable Twit about the hospital and the staff, which the state government could not condoned.

She lamented the filthy nature of the hospital environment and absence of doctors to attend to patients in critical conditions.

“This is unacceptable; it is our responsibility to ensure our environment is clean. There is no moral justification for the hospital to be unkempt.

“As of 10:00am, aside the CMD, there is no any doctor on ground to attend to patients and there are some patients who require admission and laboratory tests,” she noted.

The deputy governor said that the attitude of the workers was not in tandem with what the state government wished the people, especially as healthcare was one of the priorities of the government.

She described the dump site of the hospital as terrible, noting that instead of dumping refuse inside the pit, refuse has littered the environment, predisposing people to infectious diseases.

“Instead of dumping refuse in the pit, it is scattered all over. The workers do not dispose used syringes in the safety boxes but in the dustbin which is likely to infect those responsible for handling the refuse,” she said.

The deputy governor told the CMD that the management had failed in the discharge of its responsibilities in spite of the resources provided to the hospital by the state government.

“From what I have seen, there is no adequate utilization of what has been made available to the hospital for the management to ask for more.

“I, therefore, urge the entire staff of the hospital to turn a new leaf in the way they relate with members of the public,” she said.

Balarabe said that the state Ministry of Health, which oversees the hospital, would soon meet with all the CMDs of hospitals across the state to fashion out ways to improve health facilities in the state.

On her part, Abubakar disclosed that the facility does not have adequate staff to cater for the challenges faced by the hospital.

“We are trying our best but we are also soliciting for more assistance from the government on this issue.

“We appreciate the visit and call for more of it in other government hospitals too, so as to put us all on our toes,” she CMD said. (NAN)

  • 3 Acts of Love You Should Never Stop Doing in Your Relationship

3 Acts of Love You Should Never Stop Doing in Your Relationship

It is true that incircumstances make us happy sometimes and sometimes sad, but after all, what should prevail should be love. And one can only make sure of that through small acts of love. So, here are 3 acts of love that should be non-stop in your relationship.

    1. Learning about each other

Change is only constant, and if you stay with someone long enough, chances are that some of their preferences and opinions will change with time.

Partners need to always be on the lookout for new information about each other. Through observation and by communication you can know the changes happening in your partner’s outlook on life and adapt to it.

That way one person does not outgrow the other to the point that an unbridgeable disconnect is created between them.

    2. Being affectionate
Dwelling more on the physical part of this; you need to realize that your partner’s body will not remain tight and banging like that forever.

At that stage, your validation is needed more than ever, and your words and actions should show that you are still your partner’s number one fan.

Hold hands, don’t shy away from random kisses… and who says those sneaky booty rubs you used to do in the beginning has to ever stop?

    3. Always showing effort
It all boils down to the effort you put into the relationship or marriage.

Don’t ever stop trying to impress your babe. Don’t get too comfortable in a relationship to take your partner and their needs for granted.
