Kaduna Group Faults El-Rufai Over Alleged N1bn Payment to Bandits, Backs Gov. Uba Sani’s Security Approach

    By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

Kaduna Concerned Citizens (KCC) has dismissed former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s allegation that the Uba Sani administration paid N1 billion to bandits, describing the claim as misleading, unsubstantiated, and politically motivated. The group made the clarification on Monday during a press briefing in Kaduna.

KCC convener, Abdulrashid Teslim, said El-Rufai’s remarks—made during a recent Channels Television interview—lacked credible evidence and risked undermining the state government’s efforts to address insecurity.

Teslim stated that the Kaduna State Government under Governor Uba Sani has not made any cash payments to criminal groups. Instead, he explained, the administration has adopted a security strategy focused on providing education, healthcare, and livelihood opportunities as non-financial incentives aimed at reducing violent activities and rehabilitating repentant individuals.

According to Teslim, this approach, earlier confirmed by Commissioner for Information Ahmed Maiyaki, reflects a shift from years of unsuccessful kinetic responses to insecurity.

“No such payment was ever made by the Kaduna State Government to any criminal element,” Teslim said. “Security deserves seriousness and collaboration—not sensationalism or unverified claims.”

He added that as a former leader, El-Rufai should demonstrate statesmanship by supporting ongoing peace efforts rather than issuing what he described as divisive and unfounded allegations.

Teslim further argued that insecurity in Kaduna reached its peak during El-Rufai’s tenure, contrasting it with the relatively more stable periods under past governors such as Ahmed Makarfi, Namadi Sambo, and Mukhtar Ramalan Yero.

“El-Rufai’s era was marked by deep divisions, violence, and a breakdown of communal trust,” he claimed. “Today, these former leaders continue to support peacebuilding, while El-Rufai issues statements that undermine reconciliation.”

The group also cited the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), which recently clarified that no ransom payment was made by Kaduna State or any government body in line with national security policy. This, they said, further discredited the former governor’s allegations.

KCC urged the public, media, and civil society groups to remain vigilant and avoid circulating political statements that could fuel division or distrust.

“Kaduna needs unity, not division; collaboration, not confusion,” Teslim said. “We stand firmly behind Governor Uba Sani’s commitment to peace, transparency, and justice.”

Responding to questions from journalists, Teslim noted that after 15 years of relying on purely military strategies, the state government discovered—through independent researchers engaging directly with bandits—that many of the root causes of violence required social interventions.

He argued that adopting a peace-centered model does not embolden criminals but instead addresses long-term stability.

“If a model will bring peace without empowering criminal elements, it should be welcomed,” he said. “Over the last two years, Kaduna has experienced greater stability compared to previous years.”

Teslim concluded by affirming the group’s support for the administration’s ongoing peacebuilding initiatives.

Kaduna Govt Denies El-Rufai’s Allegation of N1bn Payment to Bandits, Threatens Legal Action

    By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

The Kaduna State Government has dismissed as false the allegation by former Governor Nasir El-Rufai that Governor Uba Sani authorized the payment of ₦1 billion to bandits. The claim, made during a recent interview on Channels Television, has sparked widespread tension and strong public reactions across the state.

In the interview, El-Rufai alleged that the current administration approved a ransom payment to bandits. The Kaduna State Government, however, described the statement as baseless and politically motivated. It also issued a one-week ultimatum for El-Rufai to retract the allegation and offer a public apology or face legal action.

The government’s response was contained in a statement released on Sunday by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Hon. (Dr.) Sule Shu’aibu (SAN). The document, titled “Re: False Claims by Former Governor Nasir El-Rufai on the Alleged ₦1 Billion Payment to Bandits,” criticized the former governor for making what it termed an unfounded accusation.

According to the statement, the claim “is not merely inaccurate; it is a fabrication devoid of context, substance, or credibility.” The government argued that the allegation was intended to mislead the public, inflame tensions, and undermine ongoing efforts to sustain peace and security in the state.

The commissioner added that El-Rufai’s remarks were especially disappointing given his previous role as governor. “For a former governor to weaponise an issue as sensitive as security for political grandstanding is a disservice to the people he once led,” the statement read.

The government emphasized that Governor Uba Sani has repeatedly maintained that he has never met or communicated with bandits, nor has he authorized any form of ransom or inducement. “Not one naira. Not one kobo,” the statement insisted, adding that the administration’s position has been consistently communicated through interviews, briefings, and stakeholder engagements.

The statement also referenced earlier clarifications by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), which had previously dismissed similar claims by El-Rufai as unfounded and inconsistent with national security protocols. ONSA reiterated that neither the federal nor any state government engages in ransom payments to criminal groups.

Highlighting ongoing security efforts, the Kaduna government noted that it is implementing a community-centered strategy focused on military operations, intelligence gathering, and social development initiatives. These include improved access to education, healthcare, and livelihood opportunities aimed at addressing the root causes of insecurity such as poverty and marginalization.

Several local security groups, including the Birnin-Gwari Vanguard for Security and Good Governance, have also spoken out to refute El-Rufai’s claim, describing it as misleading. The statement further noted that some former officials who served under El-Rufai had previously accused him of using public funds to appease certain groups, making his new allegations contradictory.

Governor Sani’s administration, the statement added, has prioritized the stabilization of vulnerable communities, leading to reopened schools, safer farmlands, and renewed collaboration among residents. The government urged stakeholders to remain focused on rebuilding trust rather than engaging in divisive narratives.

The Kaduna State Government challenged El-Rufai to present any evidence to support his claim, such as bank documents or security memos. It noted that similar allegations made in 2025 were never substantiated.

“If he fails to retract his comments and apologise within one week, the State Government will take appropriate legal measures to safeguard public order and institutional integrity,” the statement warned.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability, and responsible security management, insisting that “the era of sensational claims without evidence has passed.”

  • Akpabio Denies 2027 Presidential Ambitions Amid Poster Controversy

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has refuted claims that he intends to contest the 2027 presidential election alongside former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai. Reports surfaced after posters promoting their candidacy appeared in parts of Abuja.

In a statement released on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Eseme Eyiboh, Akpabio dismissed the posters as the work of mischief makers. He emphasized that his current focus is on supporting President Bola Tinubu through legislative collaboration.

“The attention of the office of the President of the Senate has been drawn to posters circulating in some parts of Kaduna associating the President of the Senate with a supposed El-Rufai 2027 political ambition. This is the handiwork of mischief makers and familiar fifth columnists,” the statement read.

Akpabio clarified that he has no interest in running for president and urged security agencies to investigate the matter. He described the posters as an attempt to create division among the president’s loyalists.

“Senator Akpabio is presently preoccupied with the responsibility of collaborating and providing the required legislative support to President Bola Tinubu to reset Nigeria and make the nation regain its pride of place in the comity of nations,” Eyiboh stated.

The statement underscored that Akpabio has been focused on his duties as the Chairman of the National Assembly since June 13, 2023, and has not contemplated a presidential run.

“We implore members of the public to disregard this unbridled mischief intended to distract Nigerians from the purposeful and positive interventions the Senate under the leadership of Senator Godswill Akpabio is demonstrating,” the statement concluded.

Oil Workers Call for Action as Tinubu Takes Helm of Petroleum Ministry

In response to President Bola Tinubu’s decision to personally oversee the Petroleum Ministry portfolio, oil workers are urging swift and effective outcomes.

Similar to his predecessor’s approach, President Tinubu has taken on the role of heading the petroleum ministry, with former Senator Heineken Lokpobiri assuming the position of Minister of State for Petroleum Resources.

President Tinubu revealed the assignments of 45 ministers on Wednesday, following their Senate confirmation after a week-long screening process.

The official swearing-in ceremony for the ministers is scheduled to take place on Monday at the Aso Villa State House Conference in Abuja. Each minister is allowed to bring two guests to the ceremony, as per a statement by Willie Bassey, the Director of Information at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

Lumumba Okugbawa, the General Secretary of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, voiced support for President Tinubu’s dual role as petroleum minister. Okugbawa emphasized that the key concern should be the President’s performance in the position, as all ministers ultimately report to him.

Bala Zaka, a petroleum expert, emphasized the importance of addressing crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism. Zaka also called for policies that would attract investments and revitalize the industry in line with global standards.

Emeka Akabogu, a maritime lawyer and Convener of OTL Africa Downstream, stated that President Tinubu’s competence as president implies competence in the role of petroleum minister. Akabogu stressed the importance of effective execution and hoped that the appointed ministers of state would contribute positively to Nigerian interests.

The list of appointments also included the creation of new ministries and renaming of some existing ones. Notably absent from the list were the names of Nasir El-Rufai, Stella Okotete, and Danladi Abubakar due to objections and petitions. El-Rufai reportedly withdrew his nomination, suggesting a replacement to the President.

Former Ebonyi State governor Dave Umahi and ex-Jigawa State governor Muhammed Badaru have been selected to head the Ministry of Works and the Ministry of Defence, respectively. Despite local requests for an indigenous appointment, former Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike was named Federal Capital Territory Minister, with Mariga Mahmoud as Minister of State for FCT.

Tahir Mamman, a former law school director-general, has been entrusted with the leadership of the education ministry.

VON DG Appeals to Tinubu: “Retain El-Rufai, Don’t Dismiss Him”

    By Daniel Edu

Osita Okechukwu, a foundational member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Director General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), has made a plea to President Bola Tinubu not to remove Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, from a potential ministerial position.

Although Tinubu had put forward El-Rufai’s name for a ministerial role, the Senate reportedly declined to confirm his nomination due to concerns raised in a security report.

In a statement provided to journalists in Abuja on Sunday, Okechukwu stressed the importance of El-Rufai’s presence in Tinubu’s administration, particularly in relation to the power sector.

Okechukwu stated, “The exceptional qualities that El-Rufai brings are something that we shouldn’t let go to waste. It’s in the best interest of both our nation and President Tinubu not to overlook this remarkable individual. Additionally, our political party, the APC, will reap significant benefits from a team of accomplished ministers as we approach the 2027 general elections.”

He continued, “Removing him from the equation could potentially result in the exclusion of more Nigerians from accessing reliable electricity. Our country is already witnessing the exclusion of affluent citizens due to inconsistent power supply, and many underprivileged citizens are struggling with high tariffs. We require someone as distinct as El-Rufai to address these issues.”

Okechukwu clarified, “I am not advocating for Mallam Nasir El-Rufai blindly, nor am I suggesting that he is irreplaceable. However, given his track record as a proactive leader, he possesses the necessary skills to not only revolutionize our power sector but also to cleanse the toxic aspects of the energy industry.”

“El-Rufai Asserts Political Independence: ‘Tinubu Is Desperate To Work With Me, I Am Bigger Than Any Godfather’”

    By Daniel Edu

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has reportedly stated that Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a prominent Nigerian politician and former governor of Lagos State, is eager to collaborate with him. El-Rufai asserted that he holds a higher status than any political godfather.

El-Rufai’s statement appears to highlight his confidence and assertiveness in his political career. It suggests that he does not view himself as being beholden to any influential figure within the Nigerian political landscape, including Tinubu, who has often been referred to as a political godfather due to his influence on certain political figures.

This statement reflects the ongoing dynamics and power struggles within Nigerian politics, where alliances and rivalries among politicians are constantly evolving. It’s worth noting that political statements and positions can change over time, and the context surrounding this statement might provide additional insight into El-Rufai’s perspective and the political climate in Nigeria.

Nasir El-Rufai Voices Concerns About Returning as Minister

    By Daniel Edu

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has expressed his reservations about returning as a minister at his current age. In an old video where he was discussing with unidentified individuals, El-Rufai stated that it would be unfair for him to become a minister again after a 20-year gap.

He recalled that he became a minister of the Federal Capital Territory at the age of 43 during the administration of President Obasanjo. However, now at the age of 63, he believes it would be more appropriate for younger individuals, including his children and younger brothers, to have the opportunity to serve as ministers.

El-Rufai emphasized the importance of grooming and training younger generations to succeed in various roles. He asserted that he has mentored many capable individuals who are well-prepared to assume leadership positions.

Although El-Rufai’s name is on the ministerial list forwarded by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the National Assembly for screening, he has raised concerns about the prospect of returning to the ministerial position at this stage in his life.

The video of his statements is currently circulating on social media, sparking discussions about age, succession planning, and leadership development in politics.

2023: Group Endorse El-Rufai As Tinubu’s Running Mate

Ahead of the July 17 deadline given by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for political parties to submit the lists of their candidates for the 2023 general elections, the Tinubu Support Organisation has endorsed Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai as the vice-presidential candidate.

Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) had openly admitted that he is still searching for his running mate. Sources within the APC said the party’s candidate is considering Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum or his predecessor, Senator Kashim Shettima as preferred options.

But speaking during a press conference on Monday in Kaduna, TSO’s Director-General, Aminu Suleiman, said the group arrived at the choice of El-Rufai after meeting with critical stakeholders from the northwest zone and beyond.

He believes that the choice of running mate is a critical success factor for the victory of Tinubu in 2023, hence the organisation having assessed all options wants the APC’s candidate for the vice president should come from the northwest, which is the largest voting bloc in the country.

El-Rufai, the group added, is a very experienced person who has done well in both politics and governance at the federal and state levels and is the best candidate that can complement Tinubu as Vice President.

“After due consultation with critical Stakeholders especially in the North-West, it is of the fact that El-Rufai is Asiwaju’s best choice for VP,” Suleiman said.

“The Tinubu Support Organisation is working tirelessly for the election of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the next President of Nigeria. TSO believes that the choice of running mate is a critical success factor for the victory of Asiwaju.

“We are glad that the APC has many outstanding individuals among its leaders. But having assessed all the options, it is the view of TSO that the APC’s candidate for VP should be chosen from the North-West, the single largest voting bloc in Nigeria.

“It is our view that the person that can best compliment Asiwaju as VP is Malam Nasir El-Rufai The Executive Governor of Kaduna State and we recommend that he should be chosen as the running mate.

“El-Rufai is a very experienced person. He has held office at the federal level and at the state level, and he has done well in every office. He has always stood for progressive policies. He is not afraid of difficult decisions. This is a man that is running a state government with appointees from all over Nigeria.

“His capacity is not in doubt. His personal ability is outstanding. He is firm. He is courageous. He is principled. We know that he resisted every pressure to be dragged into the presidential race. We appreciate him and his colleagues, the APC governors from the north, for sticking to the view that gentlemen should respect agreements.

“El-Rufai is a leader whose talents and energy should be brought back to the federal level. We appeal to all our leaders in the APC to support Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to choose El-Rufai as his running mate.”

  • Emir of Zazzau: Kingmakers protest against State Governors’ Action

Emir of Zazzau: Kingmakers protest against State Governors’ Action

Kingmakers of the Zazzau emirate have protested cancellation of the selection process for a new Emir by Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai.

Last Thursday, they screened eleven princes – from four dynasties – who indicated interest to succeed the late monarch, Shehu Idris.

Three came tops after voting and their names were submitted to the Secretary to the State Government, Balarabe Abbas, the next day.

One week after the SSG and other state officials witnessed how the top 3 emerged, the confirmation of a new Emir is still being awaited.

Fears that the process would take a longer time were confirmed on Wednesday when El-Rufai announced that the kingmakers voting had been jettisoned.

To the chagrin of many who already accused him of “delayed tactics”, the governor annulled the exercise on the ground that two applicants were excluded.

El-Rufai disclosed that the kingmakers were engaged in a fresh process.

“KDSG directed a new round of the selection process after cancelling the initial process, which excluded two interested applicants.” he tweeted.

Close watchers are insisting that the law empowers the emirate functionaries to recommend to the governor. They are also criticizing El-Rufai for allegedly hijacking the process.

“The governor first claimed he had not received the kingmakers’ report. Then said he was reading books on the matter, then meets the President, then cancels the process. This is laughable”, an indigene said.

A source told our correspondent that as El-Rufai tweeted on Wednesday, the kingmakers met the government’s delegates at the State House in Kawo.

“Ibrahim Aminu (Waziri Zazzau), Umar Muhammad (Fagacin Zazzau), Muhammad Abbas (Makama Ƙarami), and Dalhatu Ƙasimu (Limamin Juma’a) were seen there around 6pm. Muhammad Aliyu (Limamin Kona) arrived around 9pm”, he said.

“The kingmakers maintained their position; that they stand by the cancelled process and selection of three princes – Bashir Aminu (Iyan Zazzau), Aminu Shehu Idris (Turakin Zazzau), Muhammadu Munir Ja’afaru (Yariman Zazzau).

“They reminded state officials that the SSG conducted the voting process, using government’s criteria. They complained about not being officially notified about the nullification tweeted by the governor.

“They then completed the assessment forms of the two ‘excluded applicants’ who submitted their documents. The duo are the reason the governor cancelled the initial process. The kingmakers did not vote again.”

The two applicants Balarabe Tijjani (Bunu Zazzau) and Shehu Umar (Sarkin Dajin Zazzau).

The source added that the kingmakers were asked to reconfirm their votes.

“They reaffirmed that they voted consciously and without prejudice, in line with the governor’s public directive in his closing remarks of the third-day prayer for late Emir Shehu Idris.

“Sanusi Lamido, the former Emir of Kano, came on Zoom video to plead to them for a change of heart for his friend, Ahmad Nuhu Bamalli (Magajin Garin), but they flatly refused. They returned to Zaria around 11pm on Wednesday.”

Bamalli, the immediate past Nigerian Ambassador to Thailand, was among the eight the kingmakers dropped during screening.

Meanwhile, policemen and soldiers have been deployed to some strategic parts of Zaria.

They are currently around Kofan Doka, Babban Dodo and at the Emir of Zazzau’s Palace.

With the two excluded applicants now added, the names of all 13 interested princes are Balarabe Tijjani (Bunu Zazzau), Shehu Umar (Sarkin Dajin Zazzau), Bashir Aminu (Iyan Zazzau), Aminu Shehu Idris (Turakin Zazzau), Muhammadu Munir Ja’afaru (Yariman Zazzau), Ahmad Nuhu Bammali (Magajin Garin Zazzau).

Others are Abdulkarim Aminu (Wanban Zazzau), Aminu Umaru Idris (Dangaladiman Zazzau), Bello Umaru Idris (Baraden Zazzau), Saidu àMailafiya (Ciroman Zazzau), Shitu Dikko (Dangaladiman Waziri Zazzau), Sambo Shehu Idris (Sarkin Kudun Zazzau), and Yusuf Shehu Idris (Sadaukin Zazzau).
