Tunji-Ojo Emphasises Accountability, Reforms, and Measurable Impact

By Francis Wilfred

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening institutional reforms, improving service delivery, and enhancing internal security administration across agencies under the ministry.

Speaking at the 2026 Management Retreat of the Federal Ministry of Interior held in Abuja on Thursday, March 5, 2026, the Minister commended the leadership and staff for their dedication to the “Renewed Hope” agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Shifting Focus to Measurable Outcomes

The Minister emphasized that the ministry must raise its performance standards, noting that past milestones are merely foundations for future progress.

“Yesterday belongs to history. What truly defines our future is what we do today,” Tunji-Ojo stated. “While we have recorded significant milestones, we must continue to raise the bar in delivering efficient services to Nigerians.”

The retreat, themed “Accountable Leadership: Measuring Impact, Refining Results and Renewing Commitments,” served as a platform for:

  • Performance Evaluation: Reviewing the effectiveness of internal security and border administration.
  • Identity Management: Assessing progress in streamlining citizenship services.
  • Correctional Reforms: Strengthening rehabilitation processes to reduce recidivism.
  • Technological Integration: Leveraging AI and digital operations for immigration and border control.

Leadership and Strategic Planning

The Minister highlighted the ministry’s role in national governance, noting that its work directly impacts the daily lives of citizens through citizenship integrity and emergency response. He specifically commended the Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani, for her coordination of institutional reforms and key performance agreements.

In her remarks, Ajani underscored the importance of data-driven management and digital transformation. She noted that the retreat aimed to ensure that leadership across all ministry agencies—including the NIS, NSCDC, NCoS, and Federal Fire Service—delivers tangible, measurable outcomes.

The retreat concluded with a renewed focus on inter-agency collaboration and human capital development, with the ministry setting a “business unusual” tone for the remainder of the 2026 fiscal year.
