The Nigerian Forest Security Service (NFSS) has announced its readiness to collaborate with the government of Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo to secure forests in Anambra State, where kidnappers and killers of innocent citizens are believed to operate.
This development follows the recent abduction of an Anambra lawmaker, the kidnapping of an Anglican clergy, and the killing of a Catholic priest. The most recent incident involved a brutal massacre of eight people in Chigbonu village, Umuike Ubahuekwem, Ihiala, on December 30, 2024, by armed assailants. These acts, along with other ongoing crimes, have sparked concerns across the state.
Destiny Jonas, the Anambra Commander of the Nigerian Forest Security Service (NFSS), shared details about the organization’s activities, stating that the NFSS is prepared to leverage its expertise to secure forests and surrounding areas for both economic and security purposes. He emphasized that the organization is familiar with the terrain and can efficiently conduct operations in forests and remote areas.
Jonas expressed the NFSS’s willingness to work alongside other security agencies to support the state’s Operation Udo Ga Di Na Anambra Security Initiative. This initiative aims to rid the state’s hinterlands of criminal elements responsible for spreading fear and violence.
The NFSS commander highlighted that the agency’s ability to gather intelligence and neutralize threats in the forests is vital. He stressed the importance of government recognition and collaboration to achieve success in these efforts.
Jonas also raised concerns about the impact of insecurity on the state’s economy, noting that investors are increasingly leaving Anambra due to safety fears. Despite this, he acknowledged that the NFSS had worked alongside the police and other security agencies to ensure the safety of those returning to Anambra for the festive season, but he emphasized that more efforts are needed to address the growing criminal activities.
He pointed out that some remote areas, such as Achala, Igbariam, and Nsugbe, have been relatively safe thanks to the NFSS’s presence. The security expert revealed that the NFSS has identified several flashpoints across Anambra State, where it plans to intensify operations to dismantle criminal camps starting in January 2025.
Jonas reiterated that the NFSS requires approval from the authorities to carry out large-scale operations in these areas. He also noted that during the festive season, the NFSS had successfully rescued several kidnapping victims.
The overarching goal of the NFSS, he stated, is to eliminate criminal activities in Anambra’s forests, including deforestation, kidnapping, and other crimes.
Jonas expressed deep appreciation for the Deputy Commander-General (Intelligence) of the Nigerian Forest Security Service, Ambassador Dr. John Metchie, for his unwavering support. He described Dr. Metchie as a key figure in enhancing the service’s effectiveness and securing the safety of Anambra citizens.
He also lauded the Commander-General of the Nigerian Forest Security Service, Ambassador Dr. Joshua Osatimehin, for his leadership and efforts to maintain unity and purpose within the service.
