WHD: FG initiatives equitable healthcare system for Nigerians – Prof Pate

As Nigeria marks the 2024 World Health Day, WHD, on Sunday, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Ali Pate has disclosed that the Federal Government has implemented various initiatives to allow all Nigerians access to equitable health care services.

Pate said,” The Federal Government of Nigeria has implemented various initiatives aimed at promoting equitable access to healthcare services and ensuring that every Nigerian can exercise their right to health.”

The minister stated that through targeted government initiatives such as Basic Health Care Provision Fund, BHCPF, and the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal and Investment Initiative and strategic partnerships, “we are reaching remote and underserved communities, providing essential healthcare services and promoting health education.”

According to him, through the Basic Health Care Provision Fund, BHCPF, the Federal Government is strengthening primary healthcare delivery, improving infrastructure, and ensuring the availability of essential drugs and commodities in health facilities across the country.

The 2024 WHD is celebrated with the theme, “My Health, My Right “.

The minister stressed that this year’s theme underscores the fundamental principle that every individual is entitled to attain the highest standard of physical and mental health without discrimination or barriers.

Prof. Pate who reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to advancing the health and well-being of all Nigerians, noted that health is a fundamental human rights enshrined in the Human Rights Declaration.

He expressed government’s determination to ensure quality healthy delivery , efficient and affordable healthcare for the populace through the Primary health care facilities.

“The right to health is not just a lofty ideal; it is a fundamental human right enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights”, the minister emphasized.
However, he lamented that millions of Nigerians accessing quality healthcare remains a challenge.”

“We must take proactive steps to safeguard our health and well-being by adopting healthy lifestyles, prioritizing preventive healthcare measures, and seeking timely medical attention when necessary.”

The minister noted that government would continue to improve healthcare infrastructure and services, but there is a need for collective action and mutual support to reach the goals for a healthier Nigeria for all.
