Otunba Segun Sowunmi, former gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, announced his intention to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections. He made this declaration at the North Central National Opposition Movement town hall meeting in Jos, Plateau State. Sowunmi criticized Nigeria’s current political system and called for a shift from outdated leadership practices.
“We must address concerns about low voter turnout and citizens selling their votes,” Sowunmi said. “In a democracy, citizens should actively participate in the political process, not allow power to remain in the hands of a few.”
Sowunmi explained that the movement’s goal is to empower citizens to reshape the political landscape by supporting candidates who share their values. “We must build our own political structures and choose candidates who genuinely represent our interests,” he added.
He highlighted that this platform offers an alternative to the existing system, aiming to create a more inclusive political environment. “Everyone must take responsibility for shaping governance. We need a democracy that serves all citizens, not just the privileged few,” he said.
The former PDP gubernatorial candidate urged Nigerians to unite in demanding better governance. “The current political system has failed,” Sowunmi emphasized. “We need a fundamental reevaluation and reform of how politics works in this country.”
To ensure democracy thrives, he called on Nigerians to engage actively as voters and advocates for change. This includes rejecting corruption and demanding accountability from leaders.
