3 Reasons Never to Leave Your Toothbrush in the Bathroom

By   Milcah   Tanimu

Keeping your toothbrush in the bathroom may seem convenient, but it can harm your dental hygiene. Research shows that 60% of toothbrushes left in the bathroom contain harmful bacteria, such as **E. coli**, **Serratia**, **Giardia**, and **Salmonellosis**.

Here are three reasons why you should move your toothbrush out of the bathroom:

1. Bacteria Are Everywhere
Bathroom surfaces harbor bacteria, even with frequent cleaning. Actions like flushing the toilet, washing your hands, and brushing your teeth release germs into the air. These airborne bacteria can land on your toothbrush, making it unsanitary and increasing the risk of illness.

2. Humidity Promotes Bacteria Growth
Bathrooms are humid environments, especially those without windows. High humidity encourages bacteria and mold growth on your toothbrush. Storing it in the bathroom or a cabinet can worsen the problem. To prevent this, regularly rinse your toothbrush holder and let your brush air-dry upright.

3. It’s Close to the Toilet
Your toothbrush is often placed near the toilet, where water splashes and airborne particles can contaminate it. This is especially true in small bathrooms where sinks and toilets are close together. To protect your toothbrush, store it away from the toilet, use a cover, and always rinse it before use.

Protect your toothbrush by keeping it away from the bathroom.
