59th Independence Anniversary: IGP assures hitch-free celebrations

As FCT Command condemns killing of suspected one chance robbers by mob

By Mike Oboh

The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar Adamu has assured Nigerians of hitch-free celebrations in all States of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as Nigeria marks the 59th Independence Anniversary on Tuesday.

Consequently, all Commissioners of Police and their supervisory Assistant Inspectors-General of Police in the State and Zonal Commands across the country have been directed to emplace necessary security measures towards a peaceful and incident-free Celebration.

According to a statement by Force spokesman, DCP Frank Mba, the IGP also directed that particular attention should be concentrated on Parade Grounds, Government/Private Infrastructure and all places of public resort and recreation centres.

They are also to intensify patrols along all the major highways in the country.

Adamu congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari, and the entire people of Nigeria, on the nation’s 59th Independence Anniversary and  saluted  the courage and determination of Nigerians to build and sustain a strong, united and secure nation, despite  challenges.

Meanwhile, The FCT Police Command condemned the killing of three suspected one-chance robbers by an angry mob at Dutse Alhaji yesterday’s morning.

In a statement released on Monday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Anjuguri Manzah,  said from preliminary information, the suspected one-chance robbers were burnt to death by the angry mob following an alarm raised by their yet to be identified victim.

The Command unequivocally condemns the action of the angry mob that resorted to meting out jungle justice on the suspects instead of handing them over to the Police for discreet investigation and prosecution.

He said the Commissioner of Police FCT has ordered a discreet investigation into the unfortunate incident.

While reassuring the public of its unwavering commitment to fight one chance robbery and reduce the crime to its barest minimum, the Command enjoins the public to be security-conscious and report all suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police formation or contact the Command Control Room.
