Terrorism Blamed for Hardship in North East, Says Shettima

By Milcah Tanimu

Vice President Kashim Shettima asserted on Friday that the challenges faced by North East residents are directly linked to the actions of terrorist groups in the region.

Shettima, expressing his concern over the prolonged impact of terrorism in the area, conveyed optimism about overcoming the menace. His remarks were delivered by Senate President Godwill Akpabio during a book launch titled “Terrorism and Counter-Terrorism in North-East Nigeria: Emerging Perspectives and the Imperative of Airpower” in Abuja.

Shettima emphasized that restoring peace to the region necessitates collaborative efforts from all stakeholders. He stated, “The North East region of Nigeria has been grappling with the scourge of terrorism for far too long. The brutal acts committed by extremist groups have inflicted immense suffering upon the innocent people of the region. But amidst this darkness, there is hope. Hope that through knowledge, understanding, and the collective efforts of all stakeholders, we can overcome these challenges and restore peace and stability to the region.”

Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, the Chief of Air Staff, highlighted the effectiveness of air power in degrading terrorist activities. He remarked, “Today, we are glad to highlight the significance of airpower in the fight against terrorism. Airpower, with its unique capabilities and reach, has proven to be a game-changer in countering the asymmetric threats posed by terrorist organizations.”

While acknowledging the role of military operations, Abubakar emphasized the multidimensional nature of the fight against terrorism. He stressed the need for a comprehensive approach addressing the root causes of extremism, promoting social cohesion, and fostering economic development.

Abubakar suggested that the insights shared in the book could guide policymakers, military strategists, and practitioners in formulating holistic solutions beyond military operations.
