Celebrating the Legacy of Female Music Icons in Nigeria with “A Night of Queens”

By   Milcah   Tanimu

While the music industry has historically been dominated by men, the influence of women on the evolution of various genres cannot be overstated. In the 60s and 70s, female artists faced barriers, often relegated to supporting roles or traditional folk music performances. Despite these challenges, trailblazing women emerged, challenging societal norms and making a significant impact on the male-dominated music scene.

Icons such as Nelly Uchendu, the Lijadu sisters, Veno, Christy Essien-Igbokwe, Evi Edna Ogholi, and Onyeka Onwenu paved the way. Onyeka Onwenu, in particular, rose to prominence in the 1970s, blending traditional Nigerian rhythms with contemporary sounds, becoming a symbol of female empowerment and cultural pride.

In the early 2000s, a new wave of female Afrobeat singers revitalized the scene, carrying on the legacy of their predecessors while injecting fresh energy and perspectives into the genre. These artists challenged stereotypes, redefined the role of women in music, and showcased the diversity of Nigerian music on a global scale.

Leading voices in this movement include Tiwa Savage, Yemi Alade, Waje, Simi, Niniola, and Teni. Their contributions have not only broken gender barriers but also demonstrated the diversity and creativity of Nigerian music to a global audience. As the music scene continues to evolve, it is crucial to recognize and celebrate the transformative impact of female artists who shape the future of music and inspire generations to come.

To honor female excellence and acknowledge the groundbreaking achievements of these artists, Livewire Concerts, an international entertainment company in Nigeria, is launching its flagship all-female concert on December 17, 2023, titled “A Night of Queens.”

Sponsored by First Bank of Nigeria, Bet Naija, and Pepsi, the concert boasts an all-female lineup featuring Tiwa Savage, Teni, Simi, Waje, Niniola, Yemi Alade, Ms DSF, and more. “A Night of Queens” promises an unforgettable experience with electrifying performances, infectious excitement, and a profound sense of community. This celebration of female talent aims to captivate and inspire everyone present.
