Kaduna Group Raises Alarm Over Escalating Attacks in Birnin-Gwari

The Birnin-Gwari Emirate Progressive Union (BEPU) of Kaduna State has sounded the alarm over the increasing frequency of bandit attacks in the community.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by its chairperson, Pharm Jamila Sani, BEPU called for immediate action to address the surge in insecurity in the area.

The statement highlighted the prevailing atmosphere of fear among the local population and emphasized the urgent need for enhanced security measures to restore peace and stability.

While acknowledging the efforts of the state government and security agencies in combating the menace, BEPU urged them to intensify their efforts.

“We urgently draw attention to the recent rise in violent attacks by armed bandits in the Birnin-Gwari Local Government Area,” the statement read.

“On Wednesday, April 17th, 2024, Unguwan Danko and Unguwan Kanawa of Dogondawa Ward witnessed a devastating attack, resulting in the tragic loss of 23 lives.

“Merely 24 hours later, traders returning from the weekly market in Birnin-Gwari Town were ambushed near Mararraban Agero, resulting in the deaths of four vigilante members and the abduction of several others.

“In addition, the community of Bagoma, a suburb of Birnin Gwari, is facing a growing humanitarian crisis as women, children, and the elderly are forced into displacement due to the persistent threat of attacks. This displacement follows at least three previous assaults in the area, characterized by kidnappings and fatalities,” the Union expressed.

BEPU also praised the efforts of security personnel, including the Army, Airforce, Police, DSS, KADVS, and local hunters, for their tireless fight against armed bandits in Birnin Gwari.

While acknowledging the support of the community and government for these brave individuals, BEPU urged relevant authorities to escalate and promptly implement decisive measures to counter the escalating threat.
