Kaduna Renews Commitment to Promoting Breastfeeding

By  Milcah   Tanimu

The Kaduna State Government has reiterated its commitment to promoting exclusive breastfeeding as a key strategy to reduce infant and child mortality. This pledge was made by the state’s Deputy Governor, Dr. Hadiza Balarabe, during a press briefing marking the 2024 World Breastfeeding Week.

Dr. Balarabe highlighted the essential role of breastfeeding in providing vital nutrients and protecting infants from common childhood illnesses. Despite a concerning decline in early initiation of breastfeeding in the state—from 35.9% to 13% as reported by the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey 2021—the government is implementing various measures to support breastfeeding mothers. These initiatives include deploying qualified health providers, offering necessary vaccines, strengthening primary healthcare, approving a six-month paid maternity leave, and establishing crèches in government offices.

Addressing challenges such as ignorance, hunger, poverty, and insecurity, Dr. Balarabe expressed confidence that through collective efforts, these obstacles could be overcome. She emphasized the critical importance of breast milk, particularly colostrum, in boosting the immune system of newborns and stressed the need for continued support for breastfeeding to ensure the survival and thriving of infants in Kaduna State.
