Professor Haruna Daru of the Faculty of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the West African Postgraduate College of Medical Surgeons has emphasized that the purpose of the accreditation visit is to enhance capacity for training and research, rather than serving as a punitive measure.

Prof. Daru, who led the accreditation team to the Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital in Otukpo, Benue State, clarified that the visit is aimed at strengthening and building the institution’s capabilities.

In his remarks, Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo, Prof. Innocent Ujah, expressed appreciation for the team’s visit, describing it as a significant milestone as the institution prepares to graduate its first cohort of medical students.

Prof. Ujah praised the substantial transformation that has occurred at the hospital in a short period and assured that the university is on track to fulfill its mandate.

Acting Chief Medical Director of the Teaching Hospital, Prof. Silas Ochejele, stated that the health institution is poised to become a leading medical hub in the North Central region and across Nigeria.

Prof. Ochejele commended both the Federal and Benue State Governments for their crucial roles in the establishment and growth of the university. He also acknowledged the contributions of the Idoma community to the institution’s development.

Earlier, Prof. John Idoko urged the hospital’s management to remain committed to research, promising continued support as needed. He highlighted that research is fundamental to the medical profession, emphasizing that data from research is essential for effective treatment and other medical advancements.
