Roma Fires Daniele De Rossi After Poor Start to Serie A Season

Roma has dismissed coach Daniele De Rossi following a poor start to the Serie A season. The club announced on Wednesday that they fired De Rossi, a respected former player and recent coach, after just eight months in charge. This move comes as Roma battles near the relegation zone with only three points from four matches.

De Rossi, who took over in June 2024 after Jose Mourinho’s departure, struggled to improve the team’s performance. Despite a strong start last season, which saw Roma reach the semi-finals of the Europa League, their recent results have been disappointing. The team’s 1-1 draw at Genoa, where they conceded a last-minute goal, underscored their ongoing issues.

Roma’s statement explained that the decision aimed to realign the team’s performance early in the season. The club will announce the new coach soon. Reports suggest that Ivan Juric and Massimiliano Allegri are potential candidates for the role.

De Rossi, who won the World Cup with Italy in 2006, remains a beloved figure at Roma. His previous stint at SPAL ended with relegation, but he initially rejuvenated Roma, leading them to significant victories. However, the team’s decline and failure to qualify for the Champions League last season, coupled with this season’s poor start, led to his dismissal.

As Roma prepares to face Udinese and then Athletic Bilbao in the Europa League opener, they begin the search for a new coach to restore their competitive edge and secure their place in European competitions.
