‘Relocate to Safe Areas,’ Nigerians Warned of Imminent Flooding

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has issued a warning to Nigerians about the risks of flash floods and river overflows due to ongoing heavy rainfall. In a statement released on Friday, NIHSA Director-General Umar Mohammed urged citizens to take immediate measures to reduce the impact of potential flooding.

Umar stressed the need for public cooperation, stating, “We must heed the agency’s warnings by taking necessary actions, such as clearing drainages and gutters to allow water to flow freely.”

He noted that prolonged rainfall across the country has already caused flash floods in various regions, causing significant damage. The DG reaffirmed NIHSA’s commitment to water resource management, stating that the agency will continue to monitor river levels and issue timely flood warnings and predictions.

“The steady rise in the water levels of the Niger and Benue Rivers has reached a critical point,” Umar revealed, urging those living near riverbanks to relocate to safer areas to protect their lives and property.

Umar also highlighted the importance of collaboration between NIHSA, emergency response agencies, and the media to mitigate the impact of flooding. He stated, “This effort is aimed at saving lives, securing property, and enhancing national resilience to flooding while promoting sustainable water resources management.”

With the rainy season in full swing, NIHSA is calling on all citizens to stay vigilant, informed, and prepared as they continue to monitor the evolving situation.
