Nigeria Set to Showcase Security at Africa Military Games 2024

By   Milcah   Tanimu

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr. Nyesom Wike, recently announced that the Africa Military Games will take place in November in Abuja. He stated that this event will not only highlight Nigeria’s security advancements but also boost economic activities.

“This event will present Abuja to the world. Moreover, it will show that the city and Nigeria are safe and ready to host international events. People often form impressions from afar; however, I believe they will leave with a different narrative,” Wike said while meeting with Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) General Christopher Gwabin Musa.

In addition, Wike emphasized the FCT administration’s commitment to supporting the event’s success. “We are working with security agencies to ensure the games run smoothly. Indeed, security is a priority, and we are expediting all necessary measures. This is an international event, and we cannot afford any embarrassment,” he added. He also praised the CDS and security forces for their efforts in maintaining Abuja’s safety.

Furthermore, the Minister assured that the Federal Capital Authority would provide the necessary resources and logistics for the games. He noted that security preparations are already underway, with vehicles and resources approved. Additionally, Wike stressed the importance of expediting procurement processes to avoid delays. “No effort will be spared to ensure no security threats arise during the event. Thus, Nigeria must guarantee that this international game runs without disruption,” he concluded, commending the progress in reducing insurgency nationwide.

Earlier, CDS General Christopher Gwabin Musa commended Wike for revitalizing Abuja. “In a short time, things have improved in the FCT. We are not surprised because you are known for your commitment to work, especially in construction. Consequently, the Armed Forces are here to support you in ensuring the FCT grows free from threats,” General Musa stated.

He also highlighted the significance of the upcoming Africa Military Games. “This is the second edition, and Nigeria is the second country to host such a grand event. It will show the world that Abuja is safe and Nigeria is safe. Notably, many countries that speak negatively about Nigeria are less secure than we are. Here, the press enjoys immense freedom, which shapes perceptions. However, Nigeria is more secure than it is often portrayed,” he added.

Finally, General Musa assured full military support for the event, with over 40 countries expected to participate. “We want the Africa Military Games to be a success of the highest standard, similar to the recent Olympics in Paris. We have prepared for months, with our athletes already in camp. Thus, we look forward to working closely with you to make it a world-class event. Your leadership and the support of the FCT are essential in positively projecting Nigeria to the world,” the CDS concluded.
