Deodorant vs. Antiperspirant for Body Odour: Which Works Best?

[By Abigail Philip David]

Deodorants and antiperspirants are among the most popular products for managing body odour, but they serve different purposes. Here’s a look at how each works and which might be best for you.

What’s the Difference?

Deodorants
Deodorants target body odour caused by bacteria on the skin, especially under the arms. They use pleasant scents and antimicrobial ingredients to keep you smelling fresh.

Antiperspirants
Antiperspirants, on the other hand, reduce sweat by temporarily blocking sweat glands with aluminium-based compounds. This helps reduce both wetness and odour, as it limits the sweat reaching your skin.

Which Works Best for Body Odour?
If odour is your main concern, deodorant may be the best choice, as it neutralizes odour without necessarily stopping sweat. It’s ideal for those with mild to moderate perspiration who want to smell fresh all day. Natural deodorants with ingredients like baking soda or tea tree oil can be a good option if you prefer chemical-free products.

For those who sweat heavily or lead an active lifestyle, an antiperspirant, or a combination of antiperspirant and deodorant, can provide more comprehensive protection.

Which is Right for You?
If you have sensitive skin, you might want to avoid antiperspirants with aluminium, which can sometimes cause irritation. Instead, look for a deodorant formulated for sensitive skin or one that’s aluminium-free.

For those with high sweating needs, especially those with conditions like hyperhidrosis, an antiperspirant may be more effective.

Ultimately, both deodorants and antiperspirants are generally safe, so you can choose one based on your skin type, lifestyle, and preferences.
