Stakeholders in Nasarawa State are calling on Governor Abdullahi Sule to reevaluate his cabinet, proposing the establishment of a productivity committee to assess performance across various ministries. Inspired by President Bola Tinubu’s recent cabinet reshuffle, local analysts believe a similar approach could enhance efficiency and ensure that only productive commissioners retain their positions.
Musa Abdullahi, a political analyst in Lafia, emphasized the importance of aligning the governor’s vision with a dedicated team. He stated, “Bringing in new commissioners solely for political compensation will only hold the administration back. Rewarding those who perform is essential and could motivate others to elevate their game.”
Abdullahi highlighted President Tinubu’s strategy of reshuffling his cabinet to reposition ministers for optimal effectiveness. “The goal is not just to replace people but to ensure that talent is utilized where it can be most effective,” he explained. “Governor Sule should consider a similar approach, focusing on capacity building and realigning his team to match their strengths.”
Calls for the removal of non-performing commissioners are gaining momentum, with stakeholders pointing to specific ministries that have not effectively communicated the governor’s policies to the public. A source close to the government, who wished to remain anonymous, remarked, “The Ministry of Information has a crucial role in educating the public on government achievements but seems to be falling short.” Many residents, according to the source, rely on social media and blogs—often controversial sources—for updates on state affairs.
“The Ministry of Information needs to take a proactive stance,” the source explained. “If the public doesn’t know what the governor is doing, they can’t appreciate it or support it. Projects like the Lafia flyover underpass, the new roundabout in Akwanga, the Shandam Road Secretariat, and the 10,000-hectare rice farm in Jangwa should be celebrated as legacy projects.”
While these initiatives represent significant advancements in infrastructure and economic development, stakeholders fear that a lack of visibility may undermine public perception of the administration’s efforts.
“A consistent and transparent communication strategy is crucial,” noted a communication expert in Lafia. “A comprehensive program explaining the purpose, impact, and importance of these projects will help win the people’s trust.” The expert also recommended outreach programs targeting rural communities, where awareness of government projects is often limited. “The rural areas are essential stakeholders in Nasarawa’s development, and they deserve to know how these projects will improve their lives,” he added.
Concerns over communication extend beyond the Ministry of Information. Some commissioners reportedly lack a thorough understanding of the governor’s vision and policies, hampering their ability to convey messages to the public. “Several commissioners avoid media interactions because they are unprepared or unclear about their mandates,” a political pundit stated. “This does a disservice to both the administration and the people.”
The idea of a performance committee has resonated with political observers who believe it could enhance transparency and accountability. “The committee would review each ministry’s output, identifying both achievements and areas needing improvement,” one analyst suggested. This would enable Governor Sule to make informed decisions regarding appointments and potential role changes. “It’s not just about penalizing poor performers; it’s about fostering an environment where everyone is supported and encouraged to excel,” he added.
With public dissatisfaction rising, stakeholders argue that Nasarawa cannot afford a cabinet focused on “politics as usual.” One resident stated bluntly, “We voted for progress, not political favoritism. If some commissioners aren’t delivering results, they should be replaced with those who will.”
“The governor has worked hard to initiate numerous projects that could transform the state. It’s time to ensure his team is as dedicated to achieving his vision as he is,” added a community leader from Awe Local Government Area, emphasizing the need for loyal and competent leadership.
Insiders reveal that Governor Sule is contemplating a cabinet reshuffle in the near future. However, stakeholders are urging him to carefully assess each commissioner’s performance. “A hasty reshuffle could lead to more challenges, but a well-thought-out one could set the administration on a successful course,” advised a source within the government.
Ultimately, stakeholders hope Governor Sule will make choices that balance political realities with the aspirations of Nasarawa’s citizens. A performance-based cabinet is seen as crucial for strengthening his administration’s ability to deliver impactful projects and foster public trust.
