Tinubu Unveils National Engineering and Innovation Fund to Foster Local Solutions

By   Milcah   Tanimu

President Bola Tinubu has launched the National Engineering and Innovation Fund (NEIF), a federal initiative aimed at supporting local innovation, encouraging entrepreneurship, and advancing Nigeria’s engineering capabilities.

Represented by Bello Goronyo, Minister of State for Works, Tinubu made the announcement at the 2024 International Engineering Conference in Abuja, organized by the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE). The conference focused on sustainable engineering solutions for food security and climate change.

“This fund will provide grants and resources to engineers and technologists addressing Nigeria’s unique challenges,” Tinubu stated. “Our goal is to ensure Nigeria leads in engineering advancements across Africa.”

The president also urged engineers to explore renewable energy solutions, such as solar and wind technologies, to provide affordable and sustainable energy for Nigerians.

Engineering Solutions for Agriculture

Speaking at the event, Minister of Agriculture Abubakar Kyari emphasized the need for innovative engineering tools to tackle food security challenges. He called for affordable, adaptable machinery tailored to Nigeria’s agricultural landscape and the development of sustainable storage and processing technologies to reduce post-harvest losses in rural communities.

### Call for Sustainable Innovation

Margaret Oguntala, NSE President, highlighted the critical role of engineers in addressing climate change and food insecurity. She encouraged innovation in precision agriculture, renewable energy for rural areas, and climate-adapted infrastructure to safeguard livelihoods and boost productivity.

The NEIF initiative underscores the government’s commitment to fostering innovation and sustainability in engineering, with broad implications for Nigeria’s economic growth and resilience.
