Atiku Demands Release of Activist Dele Farotimi

By  Milcah   Tanimu

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has strongly criticized the arrest of lawyer and human rights advocate Dele Farotimi, accusing the government of reviving oppressive tactics from the military era.

In a social media post, Atiku expressed outrage over Farotimi’s detention on defamation charges, arguing that such cases belong in court, not under police jurisdiction. “The authorities are using police power to intimidate, which is unacceptable,” he stated.

Atiku accused the Tinubu administration of silencing dissenting voices and stifling free expression. He highlighted how these actions undermine democracy and urged the government to respect constitutionally guaranteed rights.

Sharing his own experience, Atiku explained that he pursued legal action when defamed in 2019, rather than involving law enforcement. He concluded by demanding Farotimi’s immediate and unconditional release, reaffirming the importance of upholding democratic principles.
