FG, AU Launch Program to Empower Women and Youth in Livestock Markets

By   Milcah  Tanimu

The Federal Government of Nigeria, in collaboration with the African Union’s Inter-African Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR), has launched the African Pastoral Market Development Platform (APMDP). This initiative aims to empower women and youth in the pastoral livestock value chain, fostering economic growth and inclusivity.

During the 1st Analytics and Implementers’ Engagement Workshop held in Abuja, stakeholders stressed the importance of inclusive development in transforming traditional livestock markets. Notably, the program introduces specialized micro-credit schemes for women and youth entrepreneurs, along with training in livestock marketing and agribusiness management.

Moreover, the initiative leverages technology by implementing mobile-based market information systems. These tools will provide real-time intelligence and advisory services, ensuring that young pastoral marketers can make informed decisions. Additionally, the program encourages private sector participation through innovative business models. These models connect experienced traders with emerging entrepreneurs, facilitating knowledge transfer and cooperative development.

Dr. Winnie Lai, Director of Animal Husbandry Services at the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, emphasized the initiative’s potential impact. She stated, “We’re not just developing a market – we’re building sustainable rural economic ecosystems.” Her perspective highlights how the program aligns with broader agricultural and economic objectives.

Furthermore, women livestock traders, such as Halima Osman from Kaduna State, have expressed optimism about the initiative. According to Halima, this program goes beyond financial empowerment by recognizing their capacity to drive innovation in pastoral markets.

Looking ahead, the APMDP will focus on continuous monitoring and impact assessment. Importantly, it aims to scale successful interventions and create replicable models for other African pastoral regions. By integrating marginalized groups, such as women and youth, the initiative promises to revolutionize livestock markets and reshape rural economic opportunities across Nigeria.

With a holistic approach, this program stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and inclusion in agricultural development.
