China Bank Approves $254M Loan for Kano-Kaduna Railway Project

By   Milcah   Tanimu

The China Development Bank (CDB) has approved a $254.76 million loan to fund the Kano-Kaduna railway project in Nigeria. The loan, announced on Tuesday, will help accelerate the construction of the 203-kilometer railway that will connect Kano and Abuja. This new rail line will provide a safer and more efficient transport option for local residents.

The China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) manages the construction, with financial backing from CDB. Once finished, the railway will enhance mobility between Kano, a major northern city, and Abuja, Nigeria’s capital. The project will also stimulate economic growth and create jobs along the route.

The Kano-Kaduna railway is part of the larger Lagos-Kano standard gauge railway modernization project. The first two segments—the Abuja-Kaduna and Lagos-Ibadan sections—began commercial operations in 2016 and 2021, respectively.

CDB highlighted that the project supports the objectives of the Third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, showcasing China’s ongoing commitment to Nigeria’s infrastructure development. With the loan approved, construction continues, and future project phases are progressing smoothly.
