Rivers Cholera Outbreak Claims 9 Lives, 14 in Observation

By   Milcah   Tanimu

Nine people have died following a suspected cholera outbreak in Rivers State, with 14 others currently under observation. The outbreak has affected Andoni and Akuku-Toru Local Government Areas, with the state’s Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ada Oreh, confirming the tragic development. Three deaths were reported in Andoni, and six in Akuku-Toru.

The health commissioner assured residents that health officials are investigating the cause and working to contain the situation. Oreh emphasized that the symptoms observed in the affected individuals align with cholera, though definitive tests are still being conducted.

The Ministry of Health is also monitoring a suspected case of acute watery diarrhea in the Isiodun community, which may be related to cholera. Rivers is particularly vulnerable to cholera outbreaks due to its environmental conditions, especially during the dry season.

In response, the state government has activated an emergency response, distributing oral rehydration solutions, intravenous fluids, and essential medicines to health facilities in the affected areas. Dr. Oreh urged residents to practice proper hygiene, including washing hands regularly with soap and water and drinking only boiled or treated water. The government continues to work alongside local authorities to control the spread and prevent further cases.
