By Anne Azuka

Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, expressed deep sorrow following the passing of Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, describing the elder statesman as an iconic leader whose death has left many, including himself, with a profound sense of loss.

Speaking during the resumed plenary session of the Delta State House of Assembly on Tuesday, the Speaker paid a heartfelt tribute to Chief Clark, who he described as a prominent advocate for justice, equality, and the rights of the Niger Delta region.

“Distinguished colleagues, it is with a heavy heart full of pain that I bring to your attention the demise of our renowned elder statesman and foremost National Leader, Chief (Dr.) Senator Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, CFR, CON,” the Speaker said, noting that Chief Clark passed away on Monday, 17th February 2025.

The Speaker further emphasized Chief Clark’s immense influence and significant contributions, calling him “an enigma and iconoclast”, particularly highlighting his role as a fiery environmental sustainability advocate who consistently “spoke truth to power.”

A Life Dedicated to Service and Justice

Guwor recalled Chief Clark’s remarkable journey, from his early days as a student leader to his distinguished career in public service. According to the Speaker, his life was a testament to an unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and the advancement of society.

“He was a book full of many chapters for each of us, an icon who inspired generations with his wisdom, courage, and vision,” Guwor stated.

The Speaker further recognized Chief Clark’s pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s narrative, particularly during his time as Federal Commissioner for Information. His leadership and dedication, Guwor said, promoted national unity, and his legacy will continue to guide those striving for a better future.

A Loss Felt Across the Nation

Guwor offered his condolences to the Ijaw Nation, emphasizing the overwhelming outpouring of love and support from across the globe, which, he noted, provides some comfort during this difficult time.

“May the soul of our beloved Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark rest in eternal peace, and may his memory continue to inspire us to work towards a more just, equitable, and united Nigeria,” the Speaker concluded.

Chief Clark, who passed away at the age of 97 in Abuja on Monday, 10th February 2025, leaves behind a profound legacy that will continue to influence future generations.
