The Niger State Police Command has begun an investigation to identify and arrest a police officer accused of going on a shooting spree while intoxicated, leading to the death of a resident.

Commissioner of Police, Shuwala Danmamman, has ordered the Divisional Police Officer of Maitumbi to track down the officer responsible for the tragic incident, which took place in the early hours of Monday.

Reports indicate that the officer, attached to the Maitumbi Police Station, had consumed excessive alcohol before picking up his rifle and firing indiscriminately.

During the shooting, he fatally wounded a resident identified as Sani in the Angwan-Kaje area of Chanchaga Local Government. Eyewitnesses claim he also attempted to shoot a local tea seller, Mai Shayi, who managed to escape.

“The officer shot Sani while he was sleeping. He also tried to shoot Mai Shayi, but he ran away. Bullet shells were found at the scene,” an eyewitness recounted.

Confirming the incident, Niger State Police Command spokesperson, Wasiu Abiodun, stated that a full-scale investigation is underway and assured that the officer would face justice.

“The command received the complaint of the alleged shooting, which occurred around 3 am on March 10, 2025, at Angwan-Kaje, Maitumbi, Minna.

“The Commissioner of Police has directed the DPO Maitumbi to investigate and identify the officer responsible for the act for further necessary action.

“Further updates will be provided to the public as the investigation progresses,” Abiodun said.
