Omowunmi, the wife of late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, moved the audience to tears with a touching tribute during the 17th Headies Awards held on Sunday, April 27, at the Landmark Event Centre in Lagos.
Mohbad was posthumously honoured with two major awards: Best Street-Hop Artiste and the Viewer’s Choice award for his hit collaboration with Chike, “Egwu.”
Taking the stage to accept the awards, Omowunmi delivered an emotional speech, declaring that she refuses to refer to Mohbad as her “late husband,” believing that he continues to live on — especially through their young son, Liam.
“On behalf of myself, my son Liam, my husband’s immediate younger brother Adura, and the Imonelization family, we sincerely thank you for this award,” she said.
She continued, “Although Mohbad isn’t physically here with us anymore, he lives on. I don’t like calling him my late husband because he lives forever, especially through our son, Liam. While Liam may be too young now to understand the depth of his father’s greatness, I believe that one day he will. Thank you so much, Headies, for shining a light on my husband’s memory and legacy. It means so much to me, to Liam, and to the entire Imonelization family.”
Wunmi’s heartfelt words and the powerful symbolism of handing the awards to their son underscored the lasting influence of Mohbad’s music and the enduring love that continues to honour his legacy.
