The Benue State Police Command has successfully repelled a group of armed bandits believed to be behind a series of criminal activities in the Sankera axis of the state.
According to a press statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Udeme Edet, the command acted swiftly by deploying patrol and tactical teams after receiving credible intelligence about armed bandits robbing villagers along the Kendev-Zakibiam road.
The statement revealed that the police operatives engaged the bandits in a fierce gun battle, during which one of the criminals, identified as Awase Ankyunyo, alias Abi Doka, was fatally wounded. An AK-47 rifle and live ammunition were recovered from him.
The suspect was confirmed dead upon arrival at the hospital, while other members of the gang reportedly fled with gunshot wounds. A manhunt is currently underway to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
The statement read in part:
“On July 11, 2025, at approximately 13:43 hours, the Police received credible intelligence about armed bandits robbing villagers along the Kendev-Zakibiam road. The Police immediately swung into action and deployed patrol and tactical teams, which successfully ambushed the bandits.
A fierce gunfire exchange ensued, resulting in one of the bandits, Awase Ankyunyo alias Abi Doka, being fatally wounded. An AK-47 rifle with live ammunition was recovered from him.”
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Benue State Command, commended the officers involved in the operation for their bravery and swift response. He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of lives and property in the state.
