2026 World Cup Qualifiers: Three Players Suspended Ahead of Nigeria vs Benin Republic Clash

As the race for the 2026 FIFA World Cup intensifies, both Nigeria and Benin Republic will be without key players when they face off in a crucial Group C qualifier in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Benin Republic head coach, Gernot Rohr, confirmed that two of his key players — Sessi d’Almeida and Yohan Roche — will miss the encounter after receiving their second yellow cards during the Cheetahs’ 1-0 win over Rwanda on Friday.

Speaking to journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, Rohr admitted that the suspensions were a setback but expressed confidence in his team’s ability to compete.

“We have lost two players (for the match against Nigeria) as a result of a second yellow card,” Rohr said. “But all is possible for the three teams — South Africa, Benin and Nigeria. We now have the decision (to win in Uyo) in our hands. There will be big suspense until the end of the qualifiers.”

Nigeria will also be without Ademola Lookman, who picked up a second yellow card during the Super Eagles’ 2-1 victory over Lesotho. The Atalanta forward was cautioned in the 64th minute, triggering an automatic one-match suspension under CAF’s disciplinary rules.

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has downplayed the impact of Lookman’s absence, assuring fans that the team remains focused and motivated.

“The team is confident and ready for the challenge. Lookman’s suspension is unfortunate, but we have enough depth and character to get the job done,” Chelle said.
He added that Lookman will continue to support the squad off the pitch as they push for qualification.
“Every player must be mentally prepared to contribute, whether starting or coming from the bench. We must stay focused and take full control of our qualification destiny.”

Nigeria currently sit third in Group C, behind Benin Republic and South Africa, making Tuesday’s showdown in Uyo a must-win fixture for the Super Eagles’ World Cup hopes.
