Ogwashi-Uku Denies Claims of Supreme Court Judgment in Boundary Dispute with Ibusa

By Anne Azuka

Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom has dismissed claims that a Supreme Court judgment has conclusively determined its boundary dispute with neighbouring Ibusa community, describing the assertion as false.

In a statement signed by the Palace Secretary, Prince Ifeakanachukwu Emordi, on behalf of the Obi of Ogwashi-Uku, the kingdom said the matter is currently before the Delta State High Court, Asaba Judicial Division, in Suit No. AKU/11/2024. The statement followed a protest by some Ibusa community members to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, during which they reportedly referenced a Supreme Court ruling on the disputed boundary.

Ogwashi-Uku maintained that both parties are actively litigating the case at the High Court. It argued that if a binding Supreme Court judgment existed on the issue, there would be no need for ongoing proceedings. “We will not litigate in the media. We will litigate in court and await the court’s determination,” the statement read.

The kingdom expressed concern over public protests and media comments on a matter before a competent court, urging all parties to allow the judiciary to resolve the dispute. It reaffirmed its position that River Oboshi historically serves as the boundary between the two communities and called on authorities to maintain law and order in the area.

Ogwashi-Uku also commended the Delta State Government for appealing for calm and reiterated its commitment to a peaceful, lawful resolution.
