Court Grants El-Rufai Bail With Strict Conditions, Keeps Him in ICPC Custody

A Federal High Court in Kaduna has granted bail to former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, subject to strict conditions. Justice Rilwan M. Aikawa ruled that El-Rufai must remain in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) until all bail requirements are met.

According to his counsel, the conditions include a ₦200 million bond with two sureties in like sum. The sureties must include a recognised traditional ruler and a federal civil servant not below Grade Level 15.

Other conditions include the deposit of his international passport, submission of landed property documents, and mandatory attendance at all court proceedings. El-Rufai is facing charges filed by the ICPC, including allegations of abuse of office and fraud. The charges are separate from another case before a Kaduna State High Court.

In the state court proceedings, the trial judge adjourned ruling on his bail application to April 21, citing unforeseen circumstances. The ICPC had earlier arraigned El-Rufai in March, and proceedings are ongoing in both courts.
