Locals should be involved in security — Defence Minister

From Abba Kabara. Gusau.

Defense minister Mansur Danali has said that the civilian Joint Task Force (JTF) should have been established long ago in view of its timely relevance in curtailing security challenge in Zamfara and other parts of the country

The minister made this assertion in Gusau when he visited the headquarters of “Operation Sharan Daji” on security assessment mission and to play professional advisory role for dealing with the lingering scourge armed attacks.

He said managing security should involve every stake holder in order to achieve desired effect, observing that soldiers are not adequate to be deployed to every nook and corner of the state.

As the military men are not very much familiar with the terrain of Zamfara, “there is need for local communities to be directly involved in the maintenance of security” he stressed.

The minister emphasizes that soldiers need the community support, logistic, moral, and whatever contribution they can afford to complement the role of the conventional security in its effort to end the insecurity situation in the state.

Danali however expressed satisfaction with the level of progress achieved by the Operation Sharan Daji command in its responsibility of wiping out banditry from the state.

The Defense minister said he was delighted with the efforts of the state government for the constitution of various committees at local levels designed as a combined strategy to end the scourge threatening the state.

He expressed hope that the committees will help in no small measure in sourcing security intelligence from the locals who are very much familiar with their terrain.
