By Samuel Ogenyi, Uyo

Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State has approved the reinstatement of 403 workers earlier sacked by the Local Government Service Commission, LGSC, in 2019.

The reinstatement of the workers who were sacked over illegal recruitment is part of efforts by the government to tackle unemployment among youths in the state.

Chairman of the Commission, Mr Monday Eyo told newsmen in Uyo, yesterday that the 403, mostly health workers were reinstated to also fill vacancies created by retirements.

“I wish to inform you that these categories of workers have been reinstated. They are health workers reinstated to increase manpower in the health sector.

“Their appointment letters have been signed thus beginning from the first week of November about 200 of them will commence work. Then by January, 2021 another batch of 203 will start work.” The chairman explained.

He further explained that a third batch comprising of 320 workers would be subsequently reabsorbed afterwards and would complete the total number of 723 that their appointments were suspended.

It would be recalled that the Governor Emmanuel announced that his administration will continue to roll out job opportunities as well as training programmes for youths in the area of entrepreneurship in order to engage them productively.

The job creation initiative would commence with a high-level skilled training employment programme that would train 9,000 youths from the three Senatorial Districts of the state annually in Oil and Gas, ICT, Agriculture, and Small and Medium Scale Enterprises.

The training according to him would prepare youths from the state for over 1,000 jobs that would be created in the recently approved Oil and Gas Free Zone and other job opportunities in the ICT and e-commerce sector.
