Abiodun Rewards Falcons, Lionesses with N30m, Eyes More Sports Hosting in Ogun

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming the state into a major destination for both local and international sporting events. This follows the successful hosting of an international women’s football friendly between Nigeria’s Super Falcons and Cameroon’s Lionesses at the newly renovated MKO Abiola International Stadium in Abeokuta.

Speaking to the press after the Super Falcons’ 2-0 victory, Governor Abiodun announced a cash reward of N30 million to both teams — N20 million for the Falcons and N10 million for the visiting Cameroonian squad — in appreciation of their performance and to encourage greater participation in sports.

“This is only the beginning,” Abiodun said. “We are creating an environment for a thriving sports economy, and this event is a major milestone in that journey.”

The governor highlighted the international friendly as a demonstration of Ogun State’s growing profile as a viable host for major sports events. He revealed that the state is preparing to host more competitions, including the U-18 and U-20 African Athletics Championships and the WAFU regional football tournaments.

He added that beyond sports development, these events help to unify Nigerians and promote tourism in the state.

“There is nothing in Nigeria that unites us like sports. It transcends tribe, religion, and region. For those 90 minutes, we are not Yoruba, Igbo, or Hausa — we are just Nigerians,” he said.

Governor Abiodun also noted that the sports arena is more than just a venue — it’s a platform for youth development and national cohesion.

“We are deliberate in our efforts. Ogun is not only the industrial and educational hub of Nigeria; it is becoming the gateway to sports and tourism excellence,” he stated.

NFF Applauds Governor’s Support

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) praised Governor Abiodun’s generous gesture, saying it would go a long way in motivating the teams.

NFF General Secretary Dr. Mohammed Sanusi described the financial reward as a timely morale booster for the Falcons ahead of their campaign in the Women Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), which kicks off in Morocco in a month. Nigeria is drawn in Group A alongside Tunisia, Botswana, and Algeria.

“This kind of encouragement from our leaders boosts the players’ morale and performance,” Sanusi said. “We thank Governor Abiodun for this outstanding show of support.”

The friendly match in Abeokuta was not only a test of team readiness but also a signal that Ogun State is ready to play a central role in the country’s sports development and international hosting ambitions.
