In the wake of renewed violence and deadly attacks on the riverine community of Oku Iboku in Itu Local Council, Deputy Speaker of Akwa Ibom Assembly, KufreAbasi Edidem has called for the urgent establishment of a naval or marine base in the area to address the escalating insecurity.
Raising a motion of urgent public importance on the floor of the House yesterday, Edidem, who is the lawnaker representing Itu state constituency, decried the recent attacks allegedly perpetrated by assailants from the neighbouring Ikot Offiong community in Cross River State.
He lamented that the latest attacks have led to the death of at least two individuals, with several others missing adding that the unfortunate incident also recorded extensive damage, including the destruction of fishing boats and vital equipment used by local fishermen.
“These continued assaults not only threaten lives and property but also jeopardize the food supply chain of the state, given that Oku Iboku is a major fishing hub,” Edidem warned.
He further stressed that if immediate action is not taken, the situation could spiral into greater chaos and more severe economic implications.
Supporting the motion, lawmakers expressed deep concern over the safety and welfare of residents in the embattled community..
They unanimously urged the state government, federal security agencies, and other relevant authorities to intervene without delay.
They also called for intensified gunboat patrols and permanent military presence to restore peace and deter future attacks.
House Speaker Udeme Otong directed the clerk to formally communicate the Assembly’s resolutions to Governor Umo Eno and all concerned agencies for prompt action.
Observers and community leaders have reiterated calls for a lasting resolution to the recurring inter-communal clashes between Oku Iboku and Ikot Offiong—an age-old conflict that has resulted in periodic displacements, loss of lives, and destruction of livelihoods in the predominantly fishing and farming region.
The House’s action would signal a a new move to bring security and stability to Oku Iboku and other vulnerable border communities in Akwa Ibom state.
