Barnsley Coach Explains Kelechi Nwakali’s Delayed Debut

By  Milcah   Tanimu

Barnsley manager Darrell Clarke has revealed why Kelechi Nwakali, signed in August 2024, has yet to make his debut. Speaking ahead of the League One match against Burton Albion, Clarke explained that Nwakali missed the entire six-week pre-season due to visa issues and remains behind in fitness compared to his teammates.

Nwakali, who last played first-team football in May 2024, featured for Barnsley’s U21s during the international break to regain match fitness. Clarke emphasized that Nwakali still has work to do, particularly in high-speed running, but is being given time to adjust to the English game.

The Barnsley midfield is highly competitive, with Clarke stating, “Our midfield is a strong area… everyone has to be at it every day.”
