Amgbare Ekaunkumo, Yenagoa

The Bayelsa State Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has expressed profound grief over the tragic deaths of several athletes from Kano State, who lost their lives while returning from the recently concluded National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

In a heartfelt statement issued on Sunday, June 1, 2025, signed by SWAN Bayelsa Chairman, Mrs. Timinepre Ohia, and Secretary, Mr. Patrick Ndubuisi, the association extended its condolences to the Kano State government, the sports community, and the families of the deceased athletes.

The statement described the incident as a devastating blow, noting the athletes’ dedication during the festival.

“It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the untimely passing of these young athletes, who represented Kano with unwavering commitment at the National Sports Festival.”

“Their loss, just as they were returning to reunite with their loved ones, is deeply painful.”

SWAN Bayelsa further expressed solidarity with Kano State, praying for strength and solace for all affected by this irreplaceable loss.

“As partners in sports, we share in your sorrow and stand with the entire Kano community during this difficult time,” the statement concluded.
