Ex-Governors in Senate: Retirement Home Claims Persist
The notion that the National Assembly has become a “retirement home” for ex-governors continues to gain traction, as 12 former governors now hold seats in the Senate. In their first year, they’ve collectively sponsored 41 bills, with many stalled in early legislative stages. One senator leads with 13 bills, while another has 12, but none have made significant progress. Meanwhile, two ex-governors have yet to sponsor any bills. In the 10th National Assembly, Abia State lawmakers sponsored the most bills in the southeast, totaling 122, but many of these were resurrected bills. Rep. Bauchi’s youngest representative introduced many bills, but most remain stalled. Gombe lawmakers, meanwhile, have a concerning record, with only two of six representatives sponsoring bills in the past year.

Lawmakers Extend Recess
The National Assembly has extended its recess by a week, postponing the resumption date from September 17 to September 24, 2024.
