Ex-governors stumble as female lawmakers struggle on the bills chart

Ex-Governors in Senate: Retirement Home Claims Persist
The notion that the National Assembly has become a “retirement home” for ex-governors continues to gain traction, as 12 former governors now hold seats in the Senate. In their first year, they’ve collectively sponsored 41 bills, with many stalled in early legislative stages. One senator leads with 13 bills, while another has 12, but none have made significant progress. Meanwhile, two ex-governors have yet to sponsor any bills. Questions remain about why these bills are held up and how the ex-governors are performing overall.

Female Lawmakers Sponsor 58 Bills in First Year
Despite ongoing concerns about underrepresentation, the 10th National Assembly saw female lawmakers sponsor 58 bills in their first year. The Senate now has only four women, down from eight, while the House of Representatives has 16 female members, including eight newcomers.

Akpabio’s Controversial First Year as Senate President
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has been at the center of controversy, yet he has only sponsored two bills during his first year in office. With his focus on presiding over the Senate and managing state matters, has Akpabio’s role overshadowed his legislative duties?

Young Lawmakers Push 100 Bills, but Progress Lags
The youngest lawmakers in the 10th National Assembly have sponsored 100 bills in their first year. While their fresh perspectives were expected to bring energy to the legislature, doubts have emerged about their productivity. Abuja’s sole Senator and two House of Representatives members have posted underwhelming results in their first year. Of the 1,650 bills introduced in the 10th National Assembly, the trio contributed only one, from Senator Ireti Kingibe.

Abia Lawmakers Lead with Bill Resurrections
In the 10th National Assembly, Abia State lawmakers sponsored the most bills in the southeast, totaling 122, but many of these were resurrected bills. Rep. Benjamin Kalu and Uzor Kalu were particularly notable. Meanwhile, Rep. Onuoha from Imo made an impact with 23 bills, seeing three passed. Despite sponsoring 48 bills, Enugu lawmakers have seen only one pass so far.

Nasarawa, Bauchi, and Gombe: Northern States’ Legislative Impact
Nasarawa state lawmakers have shown a mix of veteran experience and new energy in sponsoring bills, though results are varied. Bauchi’s youngest representative introduced many bills, but most remain stalled. Gombe lawmakers, meanwhile, have a concerning record, with only two of six representatives sponsoring bills in the past year.

Lawmakers Extend Recess
