Former Golden Eaglets player sentenced to prison for rape in Denmark

Former Golden Eaglets player and FC Copenhagen forward, Akinkunmi Amoo, has been sentenced to one year in prison by a Danish court for sexual assault. The news of his sentencing was confirmed by former BBC World Football reporter, Osasu Obayiuwana, in a tweet. Amoo, who is appealing the decision, was handed the sentence on June 23, 2023.

Amoo faced criminal charges by Danish authorities in April, July, and August 2022, which led to his arrest on September 10, 2022. He was subsequently released on bail on October 7. The outcome of the trial was reported by Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet, stating that Amoo was found guilty of charges including rape in a sexual relationship other than intercourse, attempted rape, and violations against two other women.

During the trial, Amoo received an unconditional prison sentence of one year, leaving him visibly shaken. The name ban in the case was extended due to the appeal filed by both the defense and the convicted. The appeal date has not been disclosed.

The 21-year-old footballer was a member of the Golden Eaglets squad that finished fourth at the 2019 U-17 AFCON. He also participated in the U-17 World Cup, where the Eaglets were eliminated in the round of 16. Amoo’s impressive performance at the World Cup led to a transfer to Swedish side Hammarby, and he later joined FC Copenhagen in January 2022 for a fee of 4.4 million.

However, Amoo’s time at FC Copenhagen has been limited, as he only made two league appearances last season.
