Herdsmen arms bearing will lead to anarchy – Yakasai

…ACF to make it’s position known tomorrow – Publicity Sec.

By Gabriel Udeh, Kaduna

The Chairman of Northern Elders Council (NEC) elder Tanko Yakasai, has disowned Bauchi State Governor Alhaji Bala Muhammad on his views that Fulani herdsmen should bear Ak-47 arms for protection.

The Bauchi State Governor had said on national television that Fulani herdsmen carries Ak-47 arms to protect themselves from attack for lack of government protection of their cattle from rustling.

Contrary to Bala Muhammad’s outburst, Yakasai, the first republic politician and former Adviser to late President Shehu Shagari on assembly matters, disagreed with Bauchii Governor on ground that it’s against the Constitution for individuals to bear arms, and could lead to anarchy.

Elder Yakasai, an indigenous Kano state Patriot told our Correspondent in an interview that what Nigeria needed now is to strengthen the security forces by voting more funds for the maintenance of law and order.

According to him, dedicating certain percentage of the country’s national revenue for the maintenance of security would go along way in helping to reduce security challenges.

His words: I don’t think private citizens should be allowed to bear arms as doing that will usher in the reign of anarchy.

Carrying arms should only be allowed to armed forces established by law. What we need is to strengthen the security forces by voting more funds for the maintenance of law and order.
“This can be done by dedicating certain percentage of our national revenue for the maintenance of security.

“But I do not support indiscriminate carrying of arms by the citizens. That will be opening door for criminals to take control of the society and engage in molesting members of the public unhindered. That is surely the way to anarchy and breaking down the law and order”, Yakasai stated.

Similar, Arewa Consultative Forum {ACF) National Publicity Secretary Emmanuel Yawe said, on phone that the forum will make its position known on the matter tomorrow Tuesday.
