The Kano State House of Assembly, in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, has commenced a three-day capacity-building workshop for councillors and administrative secretaries from the state’s 44 local government areas.The training programme, which is holding in Kaduna, is aimed at strengthening grassroots governance through improved legislative practice, accountability, and service delivery. It brings together elected councillors and senior local government administrators from across Kano State.
Speaking at the opening of the workshop, the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Jibril Ismail Falgore, said the programme goes beyond electoral processes and focuses on promoting good governance, the rule of law, and responsible leadership at the local level.In a statement issued on Monday by his spokesperson, Kamaluddeen Sani Shawai, the Speaker noted that the workshop was designed to equip participants with the knowledge and practical skills required for effective legislative duties and public administration.
Falgore reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to strengthening local government institutions, describing them as the foundation of democratic governance. He also commended the Governor of Kano State, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, the House Committee on Local Government, and the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs for their support in organizing the programme.
Earlier in his remarks, the Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government, Hon. Aliyu Muhammed Tiga, welcomed participants and underscored the importance of local government councillors in upholding democratic values. He said councillors play a critical role in ensuring accountability and driving sustainable development within their communities.The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, represented by the Acting Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Ali S. Faragai, described the workshop as the first major collaborative initiative between the Ministry and the Kano State House of Assembly. He said the initiative reflects a shared vision to build a more effective and responsive local government system. Faragai added that the combined efforts of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and Speaker Falgore demonstrate a strong commitment to institutional development and democratic consolidation at the grassroots level.
Also speaking at the event, Malam Lawan Badamasi, Galadiman Gezawa and former Clerk and Permanent Secretary, who currently serves as Commissioner of the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC), highlighted key aspects of local government administration. He spoke on ethics, values, and the responsibility of councillors in promoting sustainable democratic development.
In another session, the Special Adviser to the Speaker on Legislative Matters, Malam Abdullahi Alfa, delivered a presentation on financial management and budgetary processes in local government administration. The session focused on transparency, prudent use of public funds, and compliance with financial regulations.The training programme is themed, “The Role of Local Government Councillors in Kano’s Commitment to True and Sustainable Democratic Ethics and Development.” Organisers said the workshop is expected to enhance the performance of councillors and administrative secretaries in their respective local governments. Participants are expected to engage in interactive sessions, practical discussions, and expert-led presentations throughout the three-day programme, which will conclude later this week in Kaduna.
